What I’m left with is an extremely liberal perspective of the gospel that conjures up feelings of disappointment, cynicism, and frustration with nearly every church I visit.

Let's find something inspiring to do for Lent. Something cheesy like read a book and talk about it. I'm thinking a book other than the Bible (I mean, in addition to...) that is or isn't necessarily related directly to Lent.

I won't presume to speak for you, but for my part I've had to face the truth of my own selfishness, IN ADDITION to all the reasons you listed above, which resounded so closely it's just scary.
"Sure, I'd love to help out. But I might have to touch dirty people right? Or be in situations that make me uncomfortable. Or stop focusing on myself for more than five seconds. Nah, that's probably not gonna happen."
I get disgusted with my own attitude, but rather than being motivated by those feelings I just become MORE disgusted, or sweep them to the back of my head where I don't have to face them, or cover them up with whatever "ooo pretty!" thing is right in front of me.
