The "No" was about the worst scene yet. The worst of it is that whole scene could've been lifted right out, along with most of the other more embarrassing scenes. Ten minutes of cuts would make it immeasurably better.
I agree, however I must say that whether he knew it or not, this film I think can and WILL be considered a camp classic. There are moments where it was actually good, but all the monster movie references and kurosawa pre-fight posing were incredibly forced. Not to say I didn't have an absolute blast watching this movie, which I definately did. But I whole-heartedly agree with you, 10 minutes here and there and it could have been as good as any other star wars film.
The Frankenstein scene shouldn't have surprised me; the Palpatine/Anakin storyline had already jumped around on the Faust/Orpheus myths, and that legend he tells him at the opera (or whatever that is) referenced Prometheus (ergo Frankenstein). But it was still silly in a moment when silly was not what was needed.
Main references from Palpatine seemed to come from Mephistopheles and Dubya. heh heh heh.
When is a good weekend for you cats? My parents are finally paying for my gas again (now that I'm back in school) so a trip down there is a must. Sidenote: have you ever noticed that people who are like 25 and older who go back to college are more unnecessarily outgoing than others, and they try to talk about WHATEVER the subject is like an expert? I thought you might like to know that I have a 30-ish strip club bouncer in my film class who uses words that he cannot pronounce, and he used those words to describe why his favorite film is GI JANE. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?! Anyway, you kids call me sometime (when you're good and drunk if possible) and we'll work a trip out. Ta ta.
