One hive, no super? Yet all those lovely ladies. I R jealous! Our city won't let us have bees. I so so so wanna have a hive or three. We need more bee hives in this world for sure!
Tell yer dah he has a fan in Sacramento. I love the bees! :)
There are 2 hives actually, in the last picture you can see H1 in the corner, we were adding the second box Beebox to the hives and in another couple weeks we will start adding the honey boxes to the top and checking for honey regularly.
I'll have to send you a jar if your interested, since you made me such a lovely doily ^_^
How awesome!!! Your dad is so cool to do that!! I am also a fan!
And they didn't sting or anything? also queen bee is sooooo cool looking!
We have a hive/nest of carpenter bees in my front fence and I am not known as the mean troll who yells at kids because Carpenter bees are super docile and HUGE. We have gotten used to having them around and I am kinda protective of them cause they sound like little mini choppers and are HUGE but the stupid kids on my street throw rocks at them and at the fence where they live so go out and yell at them....I am a troll
Nope no stinging, what most people dont realize about bees is they will only sting if they feel threatened. A bee will die once she stings, because her stinger will break off. Same goes for most varieties of bees, wasps, and other similar type of creatures.
I love the queen, Im gonna have to do some sort of drawing based on the lovely ladies ... we have 2 queens.
Are the carpenter bees the ones commonly referred to as Bumble Bees? the big ol FAT fuzzy ones???
No they are different types of bees but are about the same size really
Carpenter bees bore into wood to make their nests and as far as I can tell do not/can not sting. I have heard the females sting but not the males The female is completely black and is HUGE HUGE HUGE but I have no not seen the female in person
that is supposed to be a female on someone's hand....be prepared she is the biggest bee I have ever seen
the males are big umm...website says between 1/2 and 1 inch same size as a bumble bee they are hairless but have some yellow on them and they tend to hover over a lot like little stealth bombers they are curious about us come and fly around us a lot to see what we are doing but never get to close they just kinda hover nearby
That's great! I'd like to try that some day. I grow pumpkins in my garden every year, and if I'm not up early enough (or gone) when the female bulbs open, they'll shrivel up and die if the bees don't pollinate them for me (they only open for one day for a couple hours after dawn). Each vine can grow up to 30 feet long and takes up a lot of space, and you're lucky to get 4 - 5 pumpkins on each vine. So I hate to miss it when one finally opens. I like honey, too!
>w< All the pumpkins that grow for us are feral >w< we never plant them but we always end up harvesting 4-20 each year... this year we have some wild tomatoes too
I doubt DFW would let you keep bees, that and you would have problems with the mosquito sprays, bees die quickly and if the queen goes your F-ed
but they are kinda fun ^_^ other then the initial O_O feeling about being near 20,000 bees, it gets really cool.
