Matthew had dressed by now and turned off the device, still filled with guilt and shame over what had been broadcast. But there was no undoing the damage now and he just had to take responsibility and face the consequences ( Read more... )

Despite the circumstances of the visit, England would admit that it had been quite sometime since he'd had a genuine tea sitting, and he knew well that Canada's tea was spot-on, as it was also his tea. Complete with the air of a British gentleman, he approached the younger country's door and tapped sharply upon it. His face was serene, much unlike the one he had been wearing just moments ago.

Of course, he knew that this was supposed to be a meeting to repair Anglo-Canadian relations, and thus treated it like a business date, no matter how many recurring feelings from Matthew's colonial period tugged at his heart.

Back straight and with a stiff upper lip, he waited for the door to be answered.

Matthew jumped a little at the knock on the door, taking a deep breath. He would be dignified and polite, a country England would be proud of.

But when he opened the door and saw Arthur there, all thoughts of being dignified and calm fled his mind and Canada just hugged the other suddenly, burying his face against England's shoulder, like when he was a young colony.

"I-I'm really sorry..."

England opened his mouth to greet Canada with something standard--"Hello" or "Well, where's the bloody tea?" being just a few in mind--but something stopped him before he could form the words. Namely, something large, warm, and soft: the embrace of a remorseful nation. At first, he stiffened, as he hadn't been hugged like this since the 1700s. And yet, it wasn't long until he relaxed into the hug, bringing up his arms to rest around Matthew's back and pat him comfortingly.

"Canada..." he said, remembering him and his brother as children, the way they had loved and depended on him. Arthur ached. "Of course it's alright, you bloody idiot. Didn't I say that before?" But there was something soft about his words that the insults didn't quite match.

Matthew relaxed slowly as England hugged him back. It had been too long since he had needed a hug, he had tried to be a brave independent nation for so long.

He nodded after a moment, feeling better that England hadn't shoved him away. "I-I know, I-I just felt so bad..."
