South Africa and Haiti aren't exactly suburban America; but they aren't war-torn or terribly crime-ridden, either. Your biggest problem in South Africa according to my girlfriend who's been living there for several months is getting your cell phone or watch stolen.

In Haiti, you're in a lot more danger from TB and landslides than from the people.

Go, if only to learn the reality of things. And besides, it's one hell of an opportunity.

Amanda - DO IT. you will probably never get a chance to experience anything like that for the rest of you life. i really wouldn't want to see you give up such a fucking amazing experience. i'm quite jealous that you've gotten this offer. and think of how much you'll grow and learn and be able to bring back from this experience. i wouldn't really worry about any personal issues. if someone gets upset with you taking an offer like this (and you aren't married with kids), then that is just ridiculous. PLEASE do not let something like this pass you by. I really hope you take the job. If you want to talk to me about it, like go out and get coffee and discuss this further PLEASE call me. does this personal issue involve a significant other? if so they should be by your side no mater which route you take. i would do it imagine the fun and excitement, just do it. you can meet many new people
