An Irony

Earlier this evening, upon entering the second floor of the library, I came across a sign on the door which read, "There are thieves operating in the library today! Do not leave your belongings unattended." Shortly afterwards I left and headed home. As I approached my building, I spied the Tesco delivery truck parked outside the ( Read more... )

You know, this makes me think of something I heard or debated about or...something, a while back. Maybe it was in one of my religion classes. Anyway, we talked about how there was a time in the past when one's spoken word was taken as oath and contract. People didn't have to draw up written contracts because there was so much power and trust in the spoken word, the verbal contract. In US society (at least) today, this is not so. There is very little trust put in the spoken word, the verbal contract. Everyone wants it "written down," so that later on, when they want to sue or be sued, they have it "in writing" that so-and-so said they would or wouldn't do this. I'm wondering if some of this trust you talk about has anything to do with this dynamic. I get the impression that other countries aren't quite a sue crazy as the States, and maybe there's more stock put into verbal agreements.

Just something to ponder, anyhoo. :) I'm glad you're happy there. :D

I think there is something to that theory. As my dad notes below, there are many evidences of a reliance on written guarantees in the States, and I know that the few times I have talked to people about issues surrounding litigation, they have been hard-pressed (as I sometimes am, myself) to understand the mindset of someone who might put themselves in harm's way just to be a plaintiff.

This entry appears to relieve me of the responsibility to locate the sales slip for your laptop. I have gone looking twice over the past week with no success. The honesty factor you are experiencing is indeed refreshing. In my work the need and desire to create the paper trail is high factor. I can certainly see a difference in the 30+ years I have been connected to the construction industry.

Aha. Yes, it does. I received an email from them today saying that the laptop is in their hands, but they are waiting on spare parts (presumeably the new touchpad) to come in. Thank you very much for your help, but the receipt (apparently) is not needed.
