No excuse for this

I am hoping for an unequivocal repudiation and condemnation of Bruce Ware’s recent comments on spousal abuse from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, from the Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and other complementarian leaders. But I’m not holding my breath ( Read more... )

That is a very dangerous thing for someone to say under the guise of religion. Not to mention that most prosecutors probably won't care that the reason for the abuse was because of a woman's failure to submit --- indeed, I think an argument like that would probably go a long way to favor the victim.

That just kinda ranks right up there with the idea that a woman can't refuse her "wifely duties" ever, doesn't it? It's boggling to me how anyone can hold that position now.

I'm very sorry to say that I know of people who believe this and also use scripture to justify it. It's sad.

Funny how the people who would use scripture to justify "wifely duties" never seem to remember that little verse about husbands loving their wives as Christ loves the church. Somehow, I can't seem to figure how it is Christ-like to rape your wife.

Whoops, posted in the wrong spot by accident.

And yea, I seriously wonder if Ware could say these things with a straight face if he had ever been abused.

It's too bad you didn't actually read the article you linked to. Bruce says there are two ways men and women respond sinfully because of the fall. A woman either seeks to dominate and manipulate her husband or she becomes a doormat. A man may become abusive of power or he may abdicate all responsibility whatsoever in his marriage. Any of these reactions is sinful!!!!

These ideas may be expressed more clearly in articles he's written, but it's even clear in this one!

That, in and of itself, is one of the most absurd things I have ever read.
