IMO, the Bell Jar is more compelling for two reasons.
They say that there are many people who committed suicide that had a copy of the Bell Jar with passages underlined. I think this is because the fact that it is supposedly biographical. If you are a severly depressed person and you read the Bell Jar, the message that you get from it is that hope is useless. I think that the fact the she didn't find anyone who could really understand also increases the idea of isolationism. And even whe she was back in her own world, and supposedly on the path to recovery, she regressed and committed suicide. I think that speaks to the hopelessness, again. This girl got help, she had counseling and medication and the lot and it did nothing for her. I think it is an example of the mental health community failing this individual and the book leaves you with the sense that this disease is incurable.
Secondly, I think that the fact that it is largely biographical makes it that much more disturbing.
