I’ve come to the conclusions that they are fairly alike.
Both:
...Smuggle for a living.
...Have a history with girls who tried to take their ship (for Han it’s in the books).
...For sure trust the people they know only to an extent.
...Like things done their way most of the time.
...Each had their own experience with a garbage shoot situation.
...Neither tends to hesitate to shoot if needed.
...Have a bounty hunter (or 2 or 6) after them.
...Are constantly on the run from a popular dominant organization.
...Can be sarcastic and witty in deadly or serious (or seriously deadly) situations.
...Have a great sidekick with a big gun (one sidekick is not so hairy).

Does Mal ever say, “That can be arranged!” in response to a sarcastic kissing comment? I can’t remember.

Like Han Solo before Return of the Jedi..and before the new editions. He is a scoundrel, but does what needs to be done in the long run. His skin comes first, but he is willing, and does, take care of others. Have you watched Firefly?

yes i have-multiple times..(own it as well) i had been reading the forums about the movie at IMDB and one person had said that firefly\serenity were ripoffs of starwars-Mal being Hansolo evil empire=the alliance etc. i knew that there were similarities in their circumstances, but i didnt see that they were alike (really) in personality...maybe though if han solo were more developed as a character they would be........

thanks to you all....just wanted to know what you thought...

The charachter of Han Solo is, as you said, not as well developed. I prefer Mal, myself, because I like the way that Joss Whedon writes..for actors, for depth of charachter.
