Chapter 1: Nightmares Await Chapter 2: Overcast Chapter 3: Reunion Chapter 4: Vicissitude Chapter 5: Routine Playlist It's dark and quiet in the room, despite the crisp white walls and the steady beeping of the monitors beside Sandra's bed. Sam paces slowly, periodically looking up at his sleeping wife, the beautiful glow in her tired but peaceful features, then down at the little one bundled up in his arms, with so much hair and pale blue eyes. Mason Hollis, their baby boy. Sam never thought he could ever be so happy in his life. Not after so much.
"Daddy's got you, son," he whispers, waggling the tip of his finger, gripped in the tiniest little fist. "Daddy wont ever let anything happen to you."
There's a knock at the door and Sam is drawn out of the moment when he sees who it is standing in the doorway. Adrian Veidt, looking as perfect and regal as ever, though a little worn, but maybe that's just his imagination. Good. Sam has had enough of the immaculate, inescapable façade that has chased them all the way out to the Dakotas in name, now in person.
Sam lays Mason down in his cradle and turns back to the door, to the man beyond-- waiting patiently for an invitation to come in, an invitation he wont get-- and he steps out into the hallway, closing the door behind him.
"Adrian. What are you doing here?” he backs Adrian away from the room to the opposite end of the hall.
"I thought that much would be obvious, Dan,” Adrian says, smooth as ice, brows quirking as he gives what strikes Sam as a threatening smile. "Sorry, I meant ‘Sam.'”
"What are you doing here?" he hisses with a frown.
Adrian is unruffled, of course, and he presses forward. "I wanted to offer my congratulations.” He offers his hand, which Sam resolutely ignores. "I understand you have a little boy now. ‘Mason‘, is it?”
"Don't you ever come near him, you son of a bitch, or so help me god, I'll kill you myself.” Or die trying. Sam has no illusions that Adrian hasn't changed in the slightest through the years. He's still the same shrewd bastard who destroyed the lives of millions, Sam and Sandra included, without batting an eyelash. Sam will never, ever give him another chance to do it, to hurt his family, again. "Get the hell out of here.”
Adrian averts his eyes for a moment, smile twitching into a frown, and he slides his hands into his pockets. "As you wish, Daniel.” And when he looks up, it's just in time to watch Sam turn his back and return to his room, closing the door behind him and leaving him alone in the empty hallway.
