It occurred to me on the bus t'other day that every 2 years since I was 15 an album has come along that seriously influenced my life and the concurrent progression of my musical tastes...
At 15 and just escaping my Spice girls phase I didn't understand the whole thing but I understood how important it was as a record! A weird thing about Lost In Translation is I never thought a whole lot of Just Like Honey until I saw it in that final scene and somehow it made that scene so powerful that I love it now! So, the soundtrack was not just about music I had never heard before, but of music that I now hear in a different way if that makes sense!
Each of those albums above, in my mind, are a time, a place, and a frame of mind and i guess that's why they stick out so much, even if I don't listen to them much anymore! Funny thing is with the exception of Ze Bible I knew of each of those albums for about a year to 6 months before actually listening to them!
Sofia Coppola, though I don't much like her films, has a thing about music. First with the Air soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides, of course, which was perfect for the film. Same with the final scene of Lost in Trans, like you said.
Can't help thinking that if the director hadn't been Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, her soundtracks wouldn't have been written by Air. Damn you, rich kid opportunism! Somebody else would probably have made a much better, way more arthousey version of the book. But with a shite soundtrack.
Meh, I'm making no sense. The Eternal Sunshine OST is also brilliant, which I could always burn you if you're interested.
Thats mighty nice of you but don't worry about it just yet... I wouldn't be surprised if its a while before next we meet! I gave Ariel a CD a while back that i'm sure you should mooch off him, plenty of stuff on there!
