Barbie is one of many things that we wish were not part of the world in which Joey is growing up. But they are, and it was only a matter of time (she plays with Barbie at pre-school anyway and seems very familiar with the Barbieverse). I also don't want Joey growing up with a feeling of being oppressed though, so if she really wants to play with Barbie then she can. It's better to try and talk to her, get her thinking about things and hope she makes the right decisions by herself.

I know exactly what you mean. Sam's so big and clever now, and I can't wait to see what's round the next corner, but... at the same time I miss everything that disappears as he grows older. Mangled half-words that get replaced by real words, and the vague elements that made him identifiably a "baby", like the clumsiness and uncertainty in his walk. They were all beautiful, and it makes me sad that I'll never see that again.
But anyway, cute as he's been as a baby, he's not going to get a decent job in the mines if he keeps it up for too much longer. Onwards and downwards!
