Dean opened his eyes, clawing against the need to sleep. His head was pounding, his chest felt heavy, and everything hurt.

He was having trouble focusing; he knew he was close to drifting unconscious again. Red lights were flickering off and on, warning alarms were pulsing around him as he fought to stay awake.

He was flat on his back; cold, hard, metal beneath him.

He tried to move, but something was holding him down. He blinked. A beam had him pinned to the floor. He tried to focus enough to move it off him using the force, but the pain in his head, and body, combined with his narrowing vision as dizziness wafted over him made it nearly impossible.

Dean was unable to focus enough to do more than groan.

As he tilted his neck, and saw the destruction around him, the smoke, the burned bodies, he remembered what had put him in this fun position.

There had been an attack on the ship - Chancellor Roman had sent him to investigate a rumored Separatist base on Geonosis. They hadn’t made it more than a few light years when they’d been ambushed.

No warning, and in full force.

Dean could still hear the screams as explosions went off all around him in the small, frigate he’d been traveling on.

This mission had been classified; he’d been traveling under an assumed name - someone must have leaked the information.

Darkness started to close in again, and an image of Cas’s face as he’d last seen it flashed in front of him.

Those sad, tired bright blue eyes; the expression of hurt.

It haunted Dean.

His last words to the Jedi Master had been in anger, and as he slipped away again, he regretted that most of all.

Knowing he would never get the chance to make things right.

Something pulled Dean awake again; his sluggish brain struggled to focus.

He’d heard something, felt something.

A feeling of warmth, and a familiar voice rippled through him.

Dean, hold on. I’m almost there.

“Cas,” he whispered, feeling his lips crack as he spoke out loud into the darkness.

His eyes started to burn, as he coughed. Smoke had filled the room.

He heard another noise over the blaring alarms; the sound of boots on metal.

He blinked, and suddenly the beam wasn’t pressing down against him anymore.

Someone was touching his face, feeling his throat for a pulse, then running their fingers over his skin. A cool material was pressed over his lips, and blissful oxygen was being pumped into his lungs.

A breather mask.

Dean tried to focus on their face, but the smoke was too thick to see more than an outline.

It didn’t matter, he knew who it was, he could feel him.

Cas had found him.

Even after what a sleemo he’d been, he’d come for him.

Cas hefted him over his shoulder, and Dean almost screamed from the pain in his ribs.

****

He must have passed out again, because he woke up to Cas’s frantic face, and beautiful blue eyes hovering above him.

He groaned, and coughed - his lungs still burned as he blinked rapidly into the too bright room.

The relief on Cas’s face as he stared down at him was overwhelming.

In the space of a heartbeat Cas’s lips were pressing into Dean’s, molding almost desperately against his - he held them there as his finger’s stroked Dean’s face.

Dean was too tired and sore to do anything but lay there, and inhale Cas’s scent. He felt his throat tighten, as a sense of peace, and rightness replaced the feeling of emptiness he’d felt ever since Cas had walked out of that diner.

Cas lingered there a moment longer, then pressed their forehead’s together. “Thank the force,” he breathed. Dean could feel his breath tickle his nose.

“It’s good to see you too,” he rasped.

Cas made a sound that wasn’t quite laughter, and wasn’t quite a sob.

A chirp sounded out.

Cas glanced over his shoulder; his brow furrowed.

“I have to get that.” He squeezed Dean’s hand. “I’ll be right back.”

Dean managed a small nod.

Cas walked out of view, and Dean’s eyes wandered around his surroundings.

He was on a small vessel, lying on a medical cot. Cas must have brought him here; it must have been how he’d reached him.

He could hear Cas talking quietly from the cockpit.

Dean tried to sit up, but his ribs bellowed in protest, and he went back to lying still.

Cas came back into view. “A republic cruiser is going to rendezvous with us shortly.”

“What happened?” he managed in between a fit of coughing; his mouth tasted like smoke.

Cas offered him some water; Dean drank it gratefully as the other man pressed the cup to his lips.

“I was just informed your ship was attacked by Separatists.” Cas said quietly. “They are proudly claiming responsibility.”

“Seriously?” Dean replied, as Cas sat down next to him. “Guess the Chancellor was right about them being a bunch of hutt-spawn.”

Cas nodded solemnly, and rubbed at his face. “I…I knew you were in danger,” he whispered, his expression more vulnerable than Dean had ever seen it. “No one knew where your ship was - the attack must have been to sudden - to thorough- for the captain to get a distress call off.”

Dean licked his lips. “Then how d…” he let his words trail off. He knew how Cas had found him; he knew how he’d known he was in danger.

The same way Dean had when their situations had been reversed.

Dean reached up and ran his thumb over Cas’s chin; Cas leaned into the touch immediately, his eyes closing. “I contacted Master Harvelle; I knew you trusted her. She sent someone to meet us - they’ll make sure we get back safely.”

Dean sensed he was missing something; his brain still wasn’t completely awake yet. “Wait, who’s ship is this?”

Cas nibbled on his bottom lip, a gesture that made Dean smile, even though it hurt his face.

“I…borrowed it.”

“You stole it.” Dean managed a laugh. “Wow.”

Cas sighed. “I feel regret for it now, but at the time there was no other option. I don’t own my own vessel, and this wasn’t sanctioned by the council. No one was aware the ship you were traveling on was actually in danger except me.”

Dean’s stomach fluttered in an odd way. “For the record, I’m glad you did.”

“So am I.”

Dean took Cas’s hand, and placed it over his heart. “Thanks for coming for me, Cas.”

Cas shook his head, and clung to Dean’s hand. “We always have each other’s backs, remember?” he breathed. It was a question and a promise all rolled into one, as he waited for Dean’s answer.

Dean wasn’t one to cry, but he felt a burning behind his eyes that had nothing to do with his aching body. “Hell, yeah we do.”

*****

Dean was doing better; still sore, and tired, but between Cas’s healing, and the efforts of the medical droid he was almost feeling alive again.

He watched Cas work. His hand hovered over Dean’s ribs, his forehead was scrunched in concentration. It was a good way to pass the time.

He realized as he watched the Jedi, how long it had been since they’d been this close. Dean had put a wall between them, and he hadn’t realized how much he’d missed the other man.

Until now.

Until he’d been about to die.

He was done ignoring Cas; done holding a grudge.

Life was too short.

As Cas sat there, breathing deeply, a thin layer of sweat on his brow, Dean found himself whispering, “I‘ve been such a laserbrain.”

Cas exhaled, and his eyes flickered open, sad acceptance radiating off of him. “We both have.”

Dean shook his head. “Maybe, but it was mainly me.” Dean cupped the back of Cas’s neck, and massaged the stiff muscles. “When we get back, you think Anna might still want my help?”

Cas blinked rapidly, his eyes way too bright again.

“You think she can forgive me, for being…well…me?” Dean attempted to joke.

Cas rested his head on Dean’s shoulder. “I know she will,” he breathed.

“And what about her Master?” Dean asked around the lump in his throat.

Cas was quiet for a moment, then he lifted his head, his lips hovering inches from Dean’s, as he watched him.

“You aren’t the only one that made mistakes, Dean.”

Blue locked with green.

Dean swallowed, his heart hammered in his chest.

Cas closed the gap again. His soft lips melting into Dean’s almost timidly. This time he was awake enough to be more responsive; he cupped Cas’s neck again, and moved his lips with the Jedi Master‘s. The kiss was gentle, simple, and almost exploratory. Cas‘s lack of experience was endearing; Dean almost smiled into the other man’s mouth as he mimicked Dean’s movements with his lips - testing the waters.

Dean didn’t push for anything more, just allowed their mouths to become acquainted. No tongue, no nibbling. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d made out with someone in such a tender, innocent manner.

It was more than a little interesting; a soft moan escaped.

Cas pulled back, concern flashing over his features, his lips were red, his face flushed. “Did I hurt you?”

Dean chuckled; basking in the warmth that was trickling through his veins. “Trust me Cas, all the sensations I’m experiencing right now are incredibly pleasant.”

Cas smiled that shy smile of his. “Oh, well, that’s good.”

Dean grinned, and carded his fingers through the Jedi’s dark hair.

Cas sighed happily and kissed him once more, before leaning back and whispering, “I’ve missed you.” His voice was rough, and his eyes vulnerable again.

“Me too,” Dean managed, his lips still tingling.

Cas took his hand again, and Dean was amazed by how natural, and right it felt.

He didn’t know what tomorrow would bring - where they would go from here - but he did know that he would never allow that chasm to grow between them again.

As the cruiser arrived, Dean knew he’d have to deal with this new threat from the Separatists, and the traitor within that had almost cost him his life today.

But at least now, there was a light in the middle of all of that darkness, and he wasn’t facing it alone.
