New to the series; here's a
Link to the Masterpost Castiel stared out the window of their vessel, and drank in the view. They were getting ready to dock, and Cas’s skin was already breaking out in gooseflesh just from the sight off all the snow and ice. It had been several days since they’d left Devon Four - Sam was completely healed, and had invited them to the Separatists main headquarters on Reaper’s World.
Castiel had never been here before, but he knew of its history. The planet had once been a paradise - temperate climate, green oceans, blue mountains - the holo’s he’d seen at the Jedi Temple had been marvels.
But a mining companies greed had left it barren, its resources stripped, and the planet had been thrust into an ice age.
Cas suppressed a shiver and pulled the dark blue cloak Dean had given him tighter around his body. It was a comforting weight and one he welcomed.
Cas shifted his gaze to Dean; his lover was sneaking glances at Sam, who was talking with Bobby in the seats across from them. Cas shook his head lightly. Dean still hadn’t told Sam that there was a very good chance they were kin. He understood Dean’s reasons, and his need to figure things out.
Cas had been supportive of his decision to hold off on speaking with the other man, but no matter how Dean acted like this was no big deal - Cas knew that he was putting on a show, and that a part of him was afraid of how Sam might react.
Castiel had no family and he would probably never meet his parents or any blood relatives, so he could only imagine what Dean was going through - or how he would react if he were in Dean’s shoes.
One thing he did know was that he needed the connections he’d formed more than he’d ever realized. Dean, Anna, Bobby, Ellen, and now Sam were a type of family for him. He valued their presence in his life - the thought of going back to a life before Dean - his heart clenched at the thought.
Cas waited until Dean felt his stare, and met his eyes.
Dean shrugged his shoulders, and his expression asked, What?
Cas shot him back a look that pointedly said, You know what.
Dean rolled his eyes, and huffed quietly.
“You want to tell him, Dean. A blind man could see that,” Cas whispered, leaning in close.
Dean plastered on that indifferent, mildly defiant look he’d grown so fond of whenever Cas brought this up.
Cas rested his hand on Dean’s thigh, as the ship jarred gently, as they docked.
“I don’t mean to push Dean. I just know this is important to you, and I think he would want to know. He’s lost the rest of his family - it would be wonderful for him to get some of it back.”
Dean’s jaw softened.
“And it would be wonderful for you as well.”
Dean sighed, and leaned in giving Cas a chaste, but affectionate kiss on the lips.
“I’m gonna tell him, babe.”
The unspoken ‘eventually’ hung in the air between them.
Cas longed to nudge him a little more, but he knew that sometimes when it came to Dean too much pressure had the tendency to backfire. Instead the former Jedi Master smiled, nodded, then turned and reached for his bags as everyone began to rise, and the doors outside opened.

They exited the ship, into an indoor structure, that was thankfully warm. It was a large open area, with ships docking, and a mixture of humans, herglics, and various other species moved about. Cas still pulled his cloak more tightly around himself, somehow just knowing that going outside without extreme winter survival gear meant certain death gave him a chill that refused to leave.
They followed Sam, Gabe, and Adam as they led them through the maze of people. They passed a large casino, and he could hear people cheering, and hollering. It seemed even an ice age couldn’t stop people from having fun. He knew the herglic’s as a species were known to love gambling, and games of chance. He could see the massive form of one, with smooth black skin, and white stripes down the sides of his arms. His blowhole on the top of his head quivered, as he breathed, and tossed several pairs of dice onto a table.
Dean elbowed his ribs; Cas turned his attention to him.
Dean leaned in, and whispered, “I never pictured you for the gambling type?” His eyes were teasing.
“I’m not - I was just observing.”
Dean rested a hand on his lower back. “I’ll corrupt you completely eventually - just give me time,” Dean grinned, his eyes warm and mischievous all at once.
“You can try,” Cas said, a trace of playful challenge in his words.
Dean laughed, then put on a serious face, knitting his eyebrows together, and altered his voice doing a decent impression of Jedi Master Crowley. “There is no try, you idiots. Either you do it, or you don’t. The order doesn‘t have time to wipe your asses every time you stub a bloody toe. ”
Cas struggled not to laugh. Dean was only exaggerating slightly in regards to Master Crowley’s manner with the padawans.
Anna was laughing softly behind them; Dean turned and flashed her wicked grin.
She laughed harder.

They reached a hover car port, and Sam waved them forward. “We’re driving from here guys.”
Adam and Gabe took a separate car. Cas noticed Anna glance back at the younger man as they got into their own car. He knew something was brewing there, and wondered if he should talk to Anna - offer advice or see if she needed support. He’d run it by Dean and see what he thought. Despite being in a relationship, he was still uncertain of how to handle some situations.
Anna got in the backseat, Dean got in next, allowing Cas to have a window seat. A small gesture of kindness that had Cas feeling warm inside. Dean knew he loved to observe, and see all that was around him.
Bobby got the front passenger seat, Sam drove, and he ordered them to buckle-up.
Cas noticed Sam watching Dean in the rearview mirror as he revved the engine, his eyes troubled.
Cas wondered if Sam had noticed Dean acting differently with him - it wasn’t an obvious change. Quick looks here and there - Dean making sure they weren’t alone in the same room for long. But he was quite skillful about his avoidance, and always friendly with Sam, even bantering with him.
Still, Sam was smart. He had a feeling Dean might not be able to keep this a secret for much longer. Sam might take things into his own hands.
Cas rested his hand on top of Deans, and leaned back as Sam started forward, telling them about the sights as they drove.
Cas watched the snow covered buildings, and enclosed roadways, and sidewalks fly past them. It was an intelligently designed city - built to get around the frigid temperatures. You could take a walk, and travel to a nearby store without ever being out in the cold.
The enclosures were clear, so you still had a view of the landscape. Tall glaciers, and snow covered mountains towered over them. It was beautiful from a distance, but Cas wouldn’t have wanted to spend a night outside of the protection the domes, and tunnels offered.
Dean’s fingers interlaced with his, and Cas smiled, basking in the safety and comfort Dean’s callused hands offered.

The Separatist’s base was very cleverly hidden. They’d veered off the main enclosed road, and into a narrow, dark side street. Sam drove straight towards a rundown, wall, and didn’t slow as they approached.
“Umm, building,” Anna sputtered as Sam chuckled, aimed a small device at the wall, and entered a series of codes.
Dean stiffened, and cursed.
Cas waited.
When they were within a meter the wall parted, revealing an even more narrow, and darker passage behind it.
“Neat trick,” Dean spat, “but you might want to try warning us next time unless you want my fist in your face.”
Sam shook his head, slowed, and entered the hidden passage.
“Just keeping you on your toes.”
Cas turned his head, and watched as the wall sealed itself behind them.
The dirt road in front of them, angled downward. “The base is deep underground, and this is the only way in or out. Figured it would make it difficult for them to drop a bomb on us, or plan a sneak attack.”
“True,” Cas replied, “but it also means should they attack, you would only have one way out as well.”
Sam nodded. “I know.”
Cas could hear the weight of his people’s lives bleeding into Sam’s words. Being a leader wasn’t easy; you had to make the touch choices.
Then they began to descend, the cars headlights showing the way.
Cas was glad he wasn’t claustrophobic.
After several minutes, the road leveled out, and expanded, revealing a metallic structure in the distance. This must have been an old bunker, or perhaps even a gang hideout.
The architecture was dull, but sturdy.
He’d encountered bunker’s like this on several worlds. Cas wondered if the Separatist’s had built it, or simply found it. It would make sense that the miners who had devastated this planet would have benefited from a secret place to hide should someone come seeking revenge against the people who’d ruined their world. Or perhaps they’d feared another group would try to usurp their business.
Either way, they would have made enemies.
Sam parked the car near the entrance, and gestured for everyone to follow him.
He rapped on the door several times, in a rhythmic pattern, and a small rectangular latch on the metal frame pulled back to reveal a pair of blue eyes.
Sam’s posture, and expression morphed into one of love, joy, and relief.
The blue eyes widened, the door unlocked, and flew open.
A woman, with long, semi-curly blonde hair flew into Sam’s arms. Sam devoured her mouth, his hands wandering all over her.
Dean whistled, and made several crude noises, earning him a glare from Cas.
The woman pulled away, blushing, and Sam cleared his throat, leaning in and whispered something to her, before turning to face them.
“This is Jessica, my better half.”
Sam had mentioned her several times, and Cas smiled warmly, extending his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Jessica. I’m Castiel.”
She smiled openly, her face was kind, and her aura warm, he liked her immediately. She took his hand. “Call me Jess, Sam’s told me a lot about all of you.” She swallowed, and added, her eyes a bit moist. “Thank you for bringing him back home.”
Cas nodded his understanding. Sam must have spoken with her about his injuries, and how they’d healed him.
“I didn’t do it alone,” Cas said, his gaze drifting to Dean.
Jess turned her attention to him, taking his hand. “Thank you, both of you for what you did.”
Dean seemed uncomfortable, but he smiled. “It was no big deal.”
She laughed, it was the kind of laugh that disarmed you, and Cas was glad Sam had someone like her in his life.

Dean stared in amazement as they walked inside - the place hadn’t seemed that impressive from the outside, but the interior was another story.
He swept his gaze over the large space, and realized this wasn’t just a base, this was these people’s home. Hell, it was a tiny town.
“Damn,” Dean murmured.
Armed guards watched the entrance, and they nodded at him once.
The décor was homey; rugs of varying color and texture lined the floors and walls. To the right was a room that was filled with technology, most likely where they gathered, and sorted intelligence. At least ten people were bent over computers.
Further back he could see kids playing - they were tossing a ball back and forth and cackling like maniacs.
The smells of food wafted from the left, drawing Dean’s attention. A kitchen, lined with pots, all simmering with meals. Several men and women were busy cooking, stirring, frying, grilling.
And that was just what he could see.
There was much more deeper in, rooms that he couldn’t seen inside of, many people walking about.
The separatists weren’t just a group of rebels. They had their whole families living here. The stakes were even higher than he’d realized, no wonder they were so well hidden. If Roman ever found out about this place, it wouldn’t just be fighters he took out, it would be children, wives, husbands.
Dean swallowed. He could not let that happen.
If they were anything like Sam, these were good people. Not the monsters Roman would have the galaxy believe.
Cas was taking in everything as well, his eyes a bit wide.
“Well guys, welcome to the family,” Sam smirked, gesturing around him, obviously happy with their stunned silence.
Dean felt his stomach churn with guilt, worry, and the word family, bounced around his skull.
He could feel Cas’s eyes burning a hole into the back of his head.
Yeah. I know, I know.
He had to tell Sam that they were most likely brothers. The guy had just opened up his home to them, put his complete trust in them.
Now it was time for him to do the same.
This should be interesting.
