New to the series; here's a
Link to the Masterpost The door to Sam’s home opened, and the sasquatch himself opened it. His expression was slightly guarded, but he was smiling.
“Hey guys, come on in.”
Dean nodded, and smiled back as he and Cas entered and were once again greeted by an overload of delicious smells.
“Perfect timing guys,” Jess said cheerfully as she loaded a plate full of pancakes on the table.
Sam gestured for them to take a seat.
Cas sat down first. His blue eyes wandered over the food, while his nostrils quivered in an adorable fashion.
The sight calmed Dean’s nerves that were threatening to rise up again. His morning with Cas had helped a lot, but this still wasn’t easy, and his emotional control had never been great - still he was doing better most days.
Cas smiled at him as Dean sat down to his right.
Dean relaxed even more.
Sam went to Jess side, and helped her finish setting the table.
“This looks freaking amazing.” Dean grinned, and he felt his mouth start salivating.
Jess’s cheeks reddened a bit. “It’s no big deal.
“Don’t be modest baby, you’re amazing.” Sam said without any hesitation, and wrapped his arms around her waist, the look on his face pure adoration.
She beamed.
“You two are so damned sweet - it’s giving me a cavity,” Dean blurted, his remark dampened by the affection that slipped into his tone. Sappy moments usually turned him into a wiseass, he couldn’t help it.
Cas shot him a half-hearted glare, to which Dean responded with a wink, and a suggestive smile.
Sam laughed, which was a welcome sound, and it further relaxed him.
“You’re one to talk - all you two have to do is look at each other, and I want to shed a tear over your epic love.”
“Fuck you,” Dean huffed, his eyes playful.
Sam was still smiling. “I think I hit a nerve,” he told Jess, and gave her a kiss, then pulled away, grabbing another plate, this one full of sausage, and bacon.
Jessica grinned, and gave Dean a warm look while Sam was gathering silverware. She rested a hand lightly on his shoulder, and whispered, “thank you for being here.”
Dean swallowed hard, and managed a nod.
Her eyes drifted to Cas, and he gave her a small, but earnest smile.
Then the sound of metal clattering on the table as Sam distributed the utensils pulled their eyes back to the food.
“Orange juice okay?” Sam asked.
“Works for me.”
Cas smiled. “That sounds lovely.”

Castiel sat down on the couch next to Dean after they’d all feasted. The meal had been delicious, and he’d overstuffed himself, which was unusual. Perhaps Dean’s habits were rubbing off on him, Cas smiled at the thought, and squeezed Dean’s thigh.
Sam and Jessica joined them moments later. Sam satg on Dean’s other side, while Jess, squeezed in at the end, snuggling up against Sam.
It felt nice, natural, and suddenly Cas found himself thinking about Anna. Wishing she was here to share this with them. He swallowed, and was startled by how much that thought had affected him. Since the incident at the droid factory, he’d been focused on trying to help Dean process and come to terms with his connection to Sam. Which he didn’t regret, but he did miss spending more time with his former Padawan.
“I wanted to show you something.” Sam laid down a holo-imager on the table that rested in front of the couch, pulling Cas out of his musings.
Dean nodded.
Sam pressed a button, and an image sprang up, of a woman. Attractive, blonde hair, friendly smile, and she was holding a baby.
“That’s me, and…mom.” Sam said quietly, his voice was steady, but there was a trace of longing. Sam still missed his mother; the mother Dean would never meet.
Cas took Dean’s hand, and laced their fingers together.
Dean was very still, his eyes taking in the image.
“It’s one of my favorites,” Sam continued, “I love how happy she looks.”
The room was silent as the image hovered before them
Dean exhaled, and asked. “What was her name?”
Cas watched as Sam turned his head towards Dean, his eyes tired, but also grateful. “Mary.”
“Mary,” Dean repeated, his voice a bit raw. “I like that.”
“Yeah,” Sam cleared his throat. “She would have liked you,” Sam’s tone and expression held traces of a smile. “Both of you.”
Dean chuckled, and Cas was relieved to see both men relaxing around each other. He knew this was going to take some time, but he liked the direction it was heading.
“I doubt that man, in case you haven’t noticed I’m kind of a rebellious asshole.”
Sam laughed, as did Jess. “Exactly.” Sam smiled, “You’re a lot like her actually.”
He felt Dean shift, and his lover lifted an eyebrow. “Really?”
“Yep. She was strong. She helped me start this group - and she never gave up on finding you. Stubborn as all hell.”
Cas’s heart both ached and swelled. “Sounds like both of you got some of her traits.”
“And her good looks,” Jess added, her eyes affectionate, as she brushed a strand of Sam’s hair from his eyes.
Dean huffed. “One of us more than others,” Dean teased, and elbowed Sam, who just smiled, but there was something in his eyes, that told Cas he’d been right.
Sam wanted Dean in his life, he wanted a brother, even though it scared him.
It was clear to Cas, that Sam now believed they were related, just as Dean did.
On some level perhaps they both had always known.
“You got any more?” Dean asked, going for nonchalant.
Sam grinned, and the image changed.
Sam was older in this one, and definitely looked more like himself. He was still tall, but more gangly, and his hair was shorter. Mary’s arms were wrapped around him, and they were both smiling, but there was a sadness in the woman’s eyes. Cas could see it, the pain that had probably haunted her, never knowing what had become of her other son.
He prayed to the force that in death she had finally found peace. That she was brought comfort in knowing that Dean and Sam had found each other.
Dean looked at him, his eyes happy, and sad all at once.
“You look alike, something in the face, the eyes, “ Cas whispered, “I’m so sorry you never got to meet her.”
“Yeah.” Dean closed his eyes a second, then turned back to the image.
Cas watched Sam, who was watching Dean. Sam seemed to be debating something with himself, after a few moments Sam placed a hand on his shoulder, and Dean stared at it in surprise.
“You okay?” There was so much in those few words. An acceptance seemed to pass between the two brothers, and Dean nodded once.
“Yeah, thanks Sammy.”
Sam blinked, and his eyes flickered with something Cas couldn‘t place, and he shook his head.
“Oops, uhh, sorry,” Dean added, probably remembering how badly Sam had reacted the last time he‘d called him that.
Sam sighed. “No, it’s okay, it’s just a little weird is all,” he glanced at Jess, who gave him a look that said, Tell him.
“Mom.” A pause. “She called me that.” Sam swallowed, and Dean’s grip on Cas’s hand tightened. “No one’s called me that since…”
“Until me,” Dean blurted, “Sithspit. I‘m sorry man.”
Sam smiled tiredly.
“I think it’s sweet,” Jess voice was tender, and earnest. Her expression gentle. “I think Mary would have approved.”
Sam sighed. “Don’t encourage him.”
“As do I,” Cas couldn’t help adding, and Jess grinned.
Dean stared at him in shock. “Huh?”
“Well, you call me Cas, instead of Castiel. At first it did annoy me to a degree, but then I realized it was a sign of affection and…” Cas found himself blushing as he realized all eyes were on him.
“See honey.” Sam grinned at Jess, “I feel that tear coming on.”
Everyone laughed, even Cas.
As they talked, and teased each other Cas could see a joy alight in Sam’s eyes, that warmed his heart.
Things were going to be just fine.

Cas had followed Jessica into the kitchen, and was helping her clean something. Dean wasn’t stupid, he knew they’d both vanished to give him and Sam some alone time.
It was sweet, and annoying all rolled into one.
Sam gave him a knowing smile, and leaned back on the couch.
“So why don’t we just acknowledge that this might be weird for awhile,” Sam said, casually, his expression didn’t give Dean the impression that he felt anything but at ease.
“Works for me.” Dean grinned, feeling quite relaxed himself. Almost all of the tension and unease he’d felt early on were distant memories.
Dean had to admit, spending the morning together had been a good idea.
Were they family now? Dean wouldn’t exactly go that far, but this was a start. And he liked the guy, had for awhile. And he was starting to think Cas was right.
He should be used to that by now.
For now, he didn’t want to push too much, but he wanted Sam in his life. He wanted to give this brother thing a chance to stick. But that couldn’t be forced, or willed into existence. So Dean didn’t try to, instead he chose a middle ground.
The former Jedi held his out his hand, and said, his tone teasing, and warm all at once. “Friends?”
Sam’s eyes flickered with warmth, surprise, and hope. “Friends.”
They clasped hands tightly, and Dean could feel their significant others watching them. The saps were probably glowing with happiness.
“I think we have an audience,” Dean murmured.
Sam’s eyes flickered to the side briefly. “I think you’re right.”
He and Sam shared another look, and chuckled, before letting go.
Dean rested his head back on the soft, sofa, feeling happy, and optimistic.
“So, maybe we can do this again?”
Dean angled his head towards the younger man, and smiled. “Absolutely.”
Sam brown eyes seemed a little brighter than normal. “Good.”
*****
“I think that went well,” Cas said, kissing Dean tenderly on the lips, as their door swooshed shut.
Dean shrugged. “It didn’t completely suck.”
Cas rolled his eyes, and playfully slapped him on the back of the head.
“Alright, things went better than I expected.”
Cas nodded. “That’s more like it.”
“But the whole brother thing - that’s gonna take some time.”
Cas touched his face. “You’re doing fine, both of you. It’s going to be, what it is. Don‘t try to force anything, just let the current take you were it will.”
Dean raised an eyebrow. “Don’t get philosophical on me Cas. You know it makes my brain hurt.”
Cas laughed. “Friendship is a wonderful start - just enjoy it, and see where it goes. Is that better?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Dean smirked, and plopped on the bed.
They were meeting Sam in the control center shortly to try and figure out what their next move was against the Chancellor. He was having Ash gather all their newest intelligence, and they’d go from there.
Dean was ready to hit the son of a hutt again. He was tired of trying to play catch up. He wanted to do more than put a dent in his plan, he was ready to take him down.
Cas was watching him.
“We’ll stop him Dean, we’ll find a way.”
Dean exhaled. “Yeah, I’m just ready to get back in this fight.”
“Me too - and at least now we know we have allies we can trust watching our back - a lot of them.”
Dean smiled. “Hell, yeah we do. That sith spawn won’t know what hit him.”
Cas nodded.
Dean only hoped they could figure out when and how to hit him before it was too late. The stakes were even higher now, he didn’t just have to worry about losing Cas anymore. Anna, Bobby, Sam, and this entire freaking compound.
They were all good people, people he’d fight for with every drop of strength he had left.
He only prayed he was strong enough to handle whatever the future might bring.
Cas sat down next to him, his hands clasping Dean’s, his eyes burned with fire, love, and strength.
And he knew Cas felt the same way.
