New to the series; here's a
Link to the Masterpost Leave it to Bela to find the shadiest place to meet. This made Junkfort station look like a palace. The air smelled like filth, and tasted even worse - a haze had settled over the skyline, making Cas feel as if he were underwater.
Lemoo, wasn’t hospitable, but he had to hand it to her, it was under the radar as they’d requested.
It had taken them almost a day to get here, and they were all on edge.
Gabe, and Adam had piloted. Anna had been very quiet the entire trip. Cas had wanted to ask her to stay at the base, but he hadn’t. Anna needed to face Meg, he understood that more than anyone, even if all he wanted to do was protect her.
This was what she needed.
Sam had remained behind; they’d lost touch with one of their smaller bases, and he had chosen to stay and try and help Ash reestablish a link to them. Sam might not have been a hacker on Ash’s level, but he was still damn good.
And Sam was their leader - he wanted to make sure his people were safe. Cas only hoped this was just a case of technology running amuck.
Cas glanced back at their vessel. Gabriel had somehow managed to find the one piece of land that wasn’t muck and swamp to land on.
Anna was talking quietly with Adam near the hatch. Cas watched as the young man pressed a kiss to her forehead, and squeezed her fingers. She smiled at him, and Cas was suddenly grateful for Adam. Her lips hadn’t so much as twitched since they’d seen Meg’s face on that holo-imager. Whatever he had said, had eased her mind, and lifted her spirits.
He’d have to make a point to get to know him better - as if Adam had read his mind - their eyes met.
Cas inclined his head, and gave him an approving smile.
Adam nodded, and smiled back.
Cas placed a hand on Anna’s shoulder as she joined him and Dean.
“We’ll be here if you need us,” Adam called out.
Gabe chuckled. “What he said - but no promises if you wake me from my beauty sleep.”
Cas just smiled as Dean made several crude gestures at Gabe, before moving forward.
“You know where we're going?” Dean made a face as the wind blew, kicking up more of the haze, and increasing the foul smell.
“Yes,” Cas fought the urge to cough, and glanced at his pad which contained an incredibly accurate map of the route they needed to follow. “It’s not far.”
“Good. The sooner we get off this wasteland the better. Somehow I don’t think a shower is gonna cut it.”
Cas’s boot stuck in the mud, and he had to yank his foot free. “I agree.”
****
Cas squinted and saw a small honest to force hut, made out of mud, straw, and other materials native to this world, sitting in the middle of a narrow dry, patch of land amidst swamp waters.
Cas could feel the temperature rising, as the sun ascended higher into the sky. It was humid, and the smell of waste and sick was getting worse.
The door to the hut swung open as they approached. Cas already had his saber drawn, and he knew Anna and Dean were ready as well.
Bela stared at them, her eyes dancing with amusement.
“Oh come now, we’re all friends here.”
Cas sighed. “I’m sure, but you won’t mind if we take a look around first.” He tilted his head towards her, already reaching out with his senses, there was another presence nearby, but only one that he could pick up. He hoped that was Meg - he wanted to trust that Bela wasn’t lying or trying to set them up, or the worst possibility - that she was working with the other woman, and laying a trap for them.
He didn’t believe this to be the case, or they wouldn’t have come at all, but caution was still their best course of action.
Bela leaned against the flimsy frame, her outfit was mostly brown, with a few specks of green thrown in for good measure. She’d certainly blend in with the landscape, which was most likely intentional.
“I figured you might - feel free to poke around.”
They fanned out, searching the perimeter, and met back at the entrance to the hut. For the moment, they were all convinced that things appeared to be on the level.
“Satisfied?” Bela asked.
“For now,” Dean replied, his tone laced with ice.
*****
The hut was dimly lit. Bela turned on a small lamp, and a figure was illuminated. Meg was tied to a chair in the center of the room - it was the only furnishing besides the small table the light source emanated from. Her head was slumped forward, and her long, dark locks, dangled limply, brushing against her filthy black tunic.
He and Dean exchanged glances as Anna stiffened.
Dean nudged her with his elbow, and gave her an encouraging smile. She didn’t return the gesture, but she did relax slightly.
Bela watched the entire exchange, the woman didn’t miss anything. Her and Cas met each others gaze, and he saw a flicker of what could be sadness, before her expression hardened again.
“As promised,” Bela presented the unconscious woman with a flourish, and a sarcastic bow.
“She alive?” Dean asked.
Bela rolled her eyes. “Yes - I sedated her. Little bitch was quite the handful.”
“Can you wake her up?” Cas asked, knowing they needed to question her.
“It will wear off on it’s own in a day or so, but,“ She lifted a vial, holding an opaque solution. “If you give her this, she’ll be awake within moments.”
Cas stepped forward; Bela pocketed the vial.
Cas sighed, knowing what she wanted. He turned to Dean. “Pay her.”
Dean looked like he’d rather eat some of the hay from the walls, but he grimaced, and offered Bela the credits she’d requested.
Her eyes narrowed. “This is only half of what I was promised.”
“That’s correct,” Cas stated. “You’ll get the rest, once we have her safely on board our vessel.”
Bela glared at him. Cas didn’t blink. She laughed, and gave him an approving once over. “Clever, very clever. There’s hope for you yet Castiel.”
****
Meg was loaded on the ship, and Cas really wanted off this planet. His blue robes Dean had gotten him were going to need to be scrubbed. He regretted wearing them off the ship, but he was so used to their weight on his shoulders, it hadn’t occurred to him until it was too late.
Dean handed him the pad with the remaining credits, his eyes silently asking if he wanted him there.
“I’ll handle it,” Cas whispered, “Watch over Anna for me.”
Dean smiled, his fingers playing with the soft fabric of Cas’s robes. “I think I can manage for a few minutes.”
“Thank you.” He almost leaned in for a kiss, then remembered Bela standing a few meters away with a tiny smirk on her lips. Instead he squeezed Dean’s fingers, and turned, walking towards the woman.
She extended her hand, and he placed the pad on her palm. After she verified the amount, she handed him the vial.
“Thanks Castiel,” her eyes flittered over to where Dean and Anna were waiting, watching. “The girl.”
“Anna,” Cas supplied.
“That bitch hurt her.” It wasn’t a question.
Cas nodded stiffly.
Bela pursed her lips. “I didn’t know that.”
“What exactly did you know?” Cas asked, knowing there was a good chance he wouldn’t get a straight answer.
“That she fucked you over on Devon Four - and that she was working for someone who likes to remain in the shadows. I figured you’d want to have a chat with her.”
Cas wanted to ask more, like how she’d come across the woman, or how she’d known he was with the separatists - but she’d already said more than he expected, so he didn’t push. People like Bela, they tended to close up when pressed. Bela had been running her entire life, from one job to the next, one location to the next - running was a way of life for her. What she was running from, he wasn’t certain, but he had his suspicions.
“Thank you for contacting us - she could prove to be most useful.”
Bela snorted, and brushed hair from her eyes. “So, about the Jedi Council,” she started, watching Cas’s face.
Cas narrowed his eyes, uncertain where she was going with this. “Yes.”
She exhaled, her lips twitching. “Those bastards don’t deserve you. When I heard what you said to them,” she paused, and closed her eyes for a moment, “Well, let’s just say I always knew you had it in you.”
Cas blinked, and managed not to gape at her unexpected kindness, but she wasn’t fooled.
“Oh, don’t look so surprised. I’m not always a heartless, manipulative, bitch. I have my moments.”
Cas laughed softly. “Apparently.”
She extended her hand. Cas took it, squeezing. He sensed a loneliness in her, a sadness, an old pain. Something he’d always suspected, but she’d never let him see.
For some reason he could feel her more now - as if there was a crack in her armor.
Cas spoke without thinking, offering something he‘d never planned. “Bela, you could join us - we could use someone with your talents, and resources.”
For a second she seemed to consider it, then she released his hand, and smiled. It didn’t reach her eyes. “I think we both know, I’m not cut out for heroics.”
Cas sighed, his heart heavy, even though he‘d expected this. “If you ever change your mind, I’m sure you’ll know how to find us.”
She laughed, and a bit of that familiar devil-may-care personae reasserted itself. Cas wondered if that was her mask. “You know me.”
Cas smiled, “Yes. I think I’m starting to.”
She shook her head, and turned to leave.
Cas began to head over to Dean and Anna, when Bela’s voice stopped him. “Castiel.”
He stopped, and faced her.
Her cocky smile was gone. “If I had known, that she hurt that little girl, you would not have found her in such good health.” She took a shaky breath, “no child deserves to carry around something like that with them.”
He stared into her too bright eyes, and knew he’d been right. Someone had hurt her, abused her, probably when she’d been a child, perhaps a parent, someone she trusted.
Cas wanted to tell her he knew what it was like to carry around the memories of a trauma. He wanted to reach out, but somehow he knew, it wouldn’t be welcome - not yet anyway, but something had shifted in their dynamic.
She knew what it was like to be haunted by your past, and maybe someday she would stop running, but not today.
So Cas swallowed, and simply said, “No, they don’t.”
Bela nodded. “Try not to get yourself killed. You‘re one of the few people in the galaxy I don’t completely hate.”
Cas puffed out a breath of air. “I’ll try.”
And then she was gone.
“Everything alright?” Dean asked as he approached. Anna had gone inside already.
Cas nodded, his eyes sad. “Yes.”
Dean touched his face, his eyes asking again. Cas leaned into the touch, knowing how lucky he was that he wasn’t alone, and that he had so many loved ones to help him shoulder his burdens. “Would you be angry with me if I told you, I think I might consider Bela to be a friend.”
“Dean’s face softened. “Nah - she might annoy the hell out of me, but that’s twice she’s done right by us.”
Cas smiled, then his face fell. “Someone hurt her Dean.”
Dean swallowed, and he nodded. “Yeah. I kinda got that vibe when I had my private chat with her on Junkfort Station.”
Cas remembered that night, and he remembered that something had made Dean decide to trust her information. Now he knew what.
Cas sighed, and pulled out the vial, studying it. “We need to speak with her.”
Dean glanced at the ramp into their vessel. “Yeah. You okay to do this?” Dean asked, his eyes searching.
Cas met his stare; he understood what his lover was asking. This woman, this Meg, had hurt Anna. Being in the same room with her, having to talk to her, bargain with her - it made his blood run cold. But he was still a Jedi- no matter what the council said.
He would not allow anger to cloud his judgment. The galaxy was at stake, he would put his personal feelings aside, and do what needed to be done.
“Yes.” Cas said, his voice was calm, and his heart rate steady.
Dean squeezed his shoulder. “Let’s go.”
Cas nodded, and mentally prepared himself for what was to come.
Part 3 A/N: Sorry this took longer than I planned (and I think it went in a different direction than some expected *grin*). Honestly life has been busy, and a lot of my free time has been spent writing, and I just didn't even think to stop with the actual writing and post the next part.
Feel free to friend this journal for the insanity :)
Comments are always loved, it's nice to know if anyone is still reading/enjoying this.
