Proud to be a Feminist

One thing that I hate about living in Toronto is the fact that men feel as though they have sovereignty over my body; as though my mere existence means that I owe them something. I face some form of harassment on a weekly basis, whether in the subway, the bus, streetcar, or walking. Guys ogle me, guys leer at me, guys catcall and whistle, guys ( Read more... )

This is way late but I just saw your post and had to say I strongly agree. I live in Toronto too, and a few years ago I was coming home on the subway after work (summer internship, actually) when a guy sat down next to me and proceeded to casually and sneakily fondle the side of my breast.

Now, I'm no stranger to sexual harassment but one thing I'd always hated about myself is that I would never say anything and would instead choose to get up and leave. I was 19 when this last incident happened and something snapped. I decided he needed to learn some respect even if I had to force it down his pathetic throat so I shoved the guy out of his seat and he went flying into a gaggle of people (the subway was in the downtown core at rush hour so you can imagine how many people would have been around).

He was so intimidated (or so I assume), he picked himself up and ran out without a second look in my direction when the doors opened.

You said it all for me! This should be a public service announcement for the entire planet, translated in any language necessary.

Do you mind if I reblog this? I'll put your name on it and everything. I just thought it was so inspiring especially in wake of SlutWalk which is a rally going on this Saturday to end sexual harassment and the treatment of rape victims as sluts

Hello,
Some men think that they were born above us.I am sad to say that here in Romania it`s not uncommon to see a man slap a woman or beat her in plain sight in the center of the city.Nobody would intervene, they wait for the police and till they arrive it`s already to late.Unfortunetly the majority of the population is uneducated and they think they are fine this way.I remember that one day I was with my mother walking home and in front of us was a guy with his fly open and stroking his thing with vigor, when he saw us he turned and tried to chase us with his hand in his pants.Don`t get me started on going to clubs. If you don`t feel a hand on your ass or on any part of you there is something wrong.I even had problems in middle school ,because I developed early ,the guys will gang up on me and corned me in to a tight place and tried to put a hand into my pants ,shirt or anywhere they could. When I went to the principal ,he said it is my fault.
