People kill one another in Wherever-istan and we justify it: Well they are mortal enemies, well they believe the other to be infidels, well they are terrorists, well we're occupying their country, well they disagree about something. And thats all OK.
And suddenly senseless violence 'hits home' and we get our emotions back.
We are stirred from complacency and apathy and once again have feelings for the plight of human beings.
And sadly only because it relates to us in some way.
I go to school. I am an American. Wow. It really does happen. Wow. Right here. Not in Wherever-istan. Wow.
