I am dreadfully sorry; I -- [ His voice is slightly raised; it's hard to judge the volume over the piledriver in his ears. But then he stops talking and just puts his hand over his mouth, because any more words would probably add to the decor. ]

And once that mouth disappears behind his hand neither lipreading nor any of her more advanced senses are much help to Lamb, though not being able to feel any nearby sounds at all makes her guess that he stopped producing them altogether. For now. ]
Daniel, if I recall correctly?
[ It's not much of a question. Lamb recalls everything correctly when the mood strikes her.
She moves aside for a moment. A few steps down the road Daniel failed to travel a magnificent metal basket awaits. She offers him the bin.
Diagnosis? A few spring to mind, some higher and with more enthusiasm than others, but it's not as obvious as all that. ]
How long has this been going on? Did you eat or drink anything unusual?
