So a question for all of you whom have worked in the restaurant industry or happen to be etiquette pros:

When picking up a to go order from a food establishment, should you tip? There is typically a place on the receipt to tip, but is it wrong to leave it blank? If so, do you give the typical 20%?

I have wondered about this a lot. I worked at O'Charley's as a hostess and I was always surprised when people tipped on to-gos. It was rare. Then again I worked at O'Charley's as a server and was surprised when they tipped, only assholes eat there. So I am not a good person to ask.

I usually tip if the person is really nice. But like on Friday I picked up food from a restaurant and sat at the bar to wait for it, and the bartender didn't offer me a drink or ask me if I wanted anything while I waited, so I did not tip him. Because all he did was bring the wrapped food from the kitchen to me. If anything I should be tipping the kitchen.

In conclusion, usually I do not tip, but if I do tip it is only a couple of dollars regardless of what the bill was.

Generally I don't tip, but I do sometimes feel like an ass for crossing out the tip line on the receipt. I feel like tipping is for the service you get from a waitstaff member, which is generally not something you get just picking up food. If it's really complicated or I ask for a bunch of annoying things sometimes I'll just round it up to the next dollar or leave a dollar or two. That's rare though.

Melissa used to be a server and bartender and she pretty much used to tip anything that was tippable. In general on a take out order I would think that unless they walk it out to your car like at the Outback Steakhouse than tipping is optional.
