let's celebrate tiny colorful squares!

Some of you may know by now that I'm the laziest being to ever grace the interwebs. My brain is always working though! I have all these great ideas for posts, arts, memes and I always end up thinking: "Whatever! somebody's done that already for sure, why bother fighting with image uploaders AGAIN?". However, I just can't skip this one, I just ( Read more... )

I love your picks. Looooove. :O And I love your first paragrah, it describes perfectly what I love about good iconmaking. It's like constrained art. You work within a tiny frame to either enhance a mood or create a new one.

I think icon making these days is a little different from when I started. On the one hand, a lot of amazing makers have sort of dropped out from the "scene" (which is to be expected, people get jobs or just fall out of fandom). And of course there are always people who will icon the same tutorialed-to-death styles, the same pictures and subjects, etc. But then there are a lot of new makers who are just fantastic. Or people who start off as OK makers and become really good over time.

I think blueymcphluey is one of the best "new" icon talents out there (with new meaning within the past few years), every one of his icons seems planned down to the pixel and the textures he makes are great! I mean just look at these...

woah, epic first comment is epic!

I agree. I'm optimistic because I keep seeing great stuff but I guess I don't get used to seeing everyone and their mother making icons. It feels like if you are able to download PS, you must icon and share it with the world even if it's just a piece of shit. Maybe I'm being a bit hardcore but I kinda miss when everything wasn't so overdone~

I already knew about @blueymcphluey because of his great rec posts and textures, but I am also very fond of how he explains how he feels about his icons, idk but it's cute and more people should do it!

However, @navras_rheya is so nice! I'm seeing his posts now and I loved them :D plus, it is always a surprise to have boys around lol I always feel like lj is a just-for-girls community wtf

I'm an Scorsese! then you are my Robert Rodriguez :P

I agree, so many people do either the cloudy pinkish textures, or the stock icons with just a little lightening and you start to curse the existance of Photoshop actions haha. ~_~ But at least a few of those people will hopefully become interested in doing more with Photoshop and maybe they'll overcome their beginnings.

lol it's true there aren't too many guys in icon making. I didn't even consider that both the people I recced were guys. Maybe it's cause they seem to fly more under the radar?

ahaha Rodriguez, I can deal with. Machete ftw. *_*

You should pimp this post on iconwhoa btw *nod*

This is so wonderful! It's always great to see where talented iconmakers get they're inspiration from. There are some truly stunning icons here (all of them, in fact). Thank you for sharing them with us (and helllllo!). :-D

aww this is too much. I'm blushing. you picked stuff I made. xD

also my favorite iconmaker? no joke, is you. I look up to your stuff when I'm outta luck. and of course another is the most common answer of all: toastandtea. her work has been inspiring for years and she NEVER EVER follows a trend. she's her own person, which is why up to this day people still copy her. I've been admiring her stuff for years but I could never be anywhere near how great she is. I get the same feeling from you actually. it's like there's always an element of surprised involved when you click on iconposts. I always ask myself, "how did they do that?". I think that's what sets some amazing iconartists apart from the regular iconmaker. when you start asking how they do it all the time and try as you might, you can't get it. that's the real deal right there. I've only seen a few people like that tbh ( ... )

ugh, I LOVE you and toastandtea. Iconmaking hall of fame - the both of you!

I love the days when I first started and we wanted to one-up each other with unique styles

yeah, I only came in at the end of that, but the shift in attitude since then has been astounding. I feel like the good ones really need to band together and bring back a revival. 2010, we can do it!!

you're kidding? are you talking about me or blindbeats? lol if it's me, I think that's an overstatement. I could never be in the same ranking as this awesome artist. but thank for making me smile today. =p

and aww I just saw stuff you do and you're pretty amazing. ;) it's hard to find good icons these days. they look rather the same and boring. =/ so I'm glad to find "new blood". I don't know if we'll ever get over the slump tbh. I always thought maybe it's just time to pass the torch to the newer iconmakers. =/

I agree so much on toastandtea! I've spent minutes and minutes looking at her stuff, especially the bigger ones, literally studying them -NO KIDDING!

And it's funny that you think you are drying up because I swear nobody can copy your style, as well. I've told you before that your coloring is your trademark, but also your graphics... they are so crafty, they look like you've made them with your own hands! Idk but you add a bunch of cool images and always an awesome font, and the final product is so intodelirium, you know what I mean? Also, you are witty and you know how to be seductive and inviting and that's a great quality, imo. I wish you could see that because I know that many people think just like me :D

Niiiice! And thanks, you truly are my wifey <3

THIS.

Seriously. EPIC CHOICES. There are some icons in here that I've never seen before that are seriously mind-blowingly awesome. I am always a wee bit envious but also in awe at the same time when I see icon-makers who make fantastic complex and artistic icons, because I pretty much fail at anything that isn't super simple. Sometimes I see an icon post and I literally just spend like a half hour staring at the pretties.

Anyway, agreed on everything.

Oh woah, I can't begin to thank you enough for how much I've learned from your psd's and UNIQUE style at iconmaking! I especially love your cropping and how you choose caps, A+++ and I'm surprised to hear that you fail at complex stuff because when I see your icons I always think that they have their own level of complexity!

:o ZOMG dude, I have always looked at icons like yours and thought "HOT DAMN I wish I could do that." So I don't know how my lowly .psd's could ever help you learn more, but um, yes, it makes me WAY MORE EXCITED THAN IT SHOULD to hear you say that :D (And I never turn down compliments, so TY)

Seriously, though, you don't need any help developing a fabulous, unique style ♥

Are you for real? Your Spooks psd's ARE MY FUCKING BIBLE! I remember when you post them and I went nuts because goddam your icons are so amazingly layered and colored *yum* I'm really flattered but I gotta be honest it was all because of you ♥!

Oh wow this is so neat. I have to second what everyone else has said. I agree SO much with your advice/thoughts about good icon making. It's makers like you that I look up to immensely.
I really agree with schmiss as well. I completely adore blueymcphluey's icons. I've learned a ton from him as well. Especially about cap choice. Now when I browse caps I look for odd images first - slightly blurred images, a cap of the back of someone's head, anything that would make for an interesting crop. I think the most important thing I've learned lately is not to play it too safe. I still do, sadly most of the time, but I find that when I DO venture out of my comfort zone I'm surprisingly pleased with the results.
I have to say that I am always super impressed with people who can make text work as well. I always find that it's such a hit and miss but there are some makers who do it with ease. I've always been so envious of that.

One of my personal favorite makers is hellododger. Their icons always seem to have a certain grittiness without being too grungy. If that even ( ... )

I totally agree about hellododger - texture use out of this world!

My absolute favourite from them ♥

I LOVE THIS ABOUT YOU! Even when I'm not a fan of a certain show, your icons always makes me wanna watch them, especially with Fringe, because you use the most inviting shots ever! :D

Oh God, yes, Albsolutely! Kat is in my top 5 and will always be. Her use of textures is just out of this world. And of course I had to add you here, your icons are like puzzles for me!
