Your iTunes store should be able to change countries. Since you are operating in Canadian money, yours is probably set to Canada. Sign out of that Canadian account, create a new US account (with a different e-mail address, unfortunately), and add the money that way
I have to fluctuate between the currencies a lot and it drives me bonkers, but it is possible. I use my McGill e-mail address for the Canadian account and my personal e-mail for the American account - same passwords for less of a hassle

I forgot to say the most obvious part - you have to switch your iTunes store into the United States mode to create the new US account. Did they teach you crazy Canadians what the American flag looks like in school? :)
from what i've seen i think anthony's right... although i very much hope he's wrong! anyways i went to create account in itunes and it said. "create itunes account for canadian store if billing account not in canada click here" Am i at the wrong place? was your american address needed?
