I saw that Tear-mun did this, and I thought it was a good idea too. (Sorry, still learning names!)
Character: Toph Bei Fong
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Version: I’m taking Toph at the beginning of the third season, in which she can metalbend, sandbend, and has taught Aang some earthbending.
Age: 12
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Toph is rather on the short side, as she’s only twelve years old. She has long black hair which she puts up in a sort of bun with long bangs that cover her face. Her eyes are a pale green, as she is blind. She wears a green headband with white puffs about where her ears lay, and her normal clothes include a green outfit with wide pants which is covered by a sort of tunic which is a beige color. She wears a wide belt and wears ankle and wrist coverings. She does not wear shoes. For a picture:
Personality: Toph grew up in a very refined atmosphere, but that doesn’t mean that she has a refined attitude. Toph is very blunt and very dirty. In one episode, she even points out that she is always covered in a “healthy layer of dirt.” She is also seen picking her nose, cleaning the dirt and god-knows-what from between her toes, and spitting. This behavior is her way of saying that she is nothing like the rest of her family, and that she has no intention of behaving like them when she’s not around them.
Toph can be rude, and she also tends to have a short temper. In some cases however, she will treat others with a certain amount of respect, like Iroh. He had given her advice in a time she needed it, and he didn’t treat her as a person with a disability, and thus earned her high respect. For most people however, she treats them like a punching bag. Toph shows affection by punching others. She is also blunt, and says whatever is on her mind. This usually leads to arguments with people in her traveling group, namely Katara. Toph’s anger can be a problem at times, but once she’s cooled down, she will apologize for whatever she did wrong.
Despite her aggressive nature, Toph does have a soft side. She doesn’t voice her concern often, but she does think about what she looks like from time to time. Since she can’t see, she has no idea if she’s considered ugly, pretty, or what have you, and the issue does come up from time to time. She also cares about her parents, even though she voices how she despises the way they treat her. She asks Katara to write a letter to them for her to let them know that she’s still ok.
Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths: Toph is an earthbender, which means that she can move rocks, dirt, and well, earth to her will. She can also bend metal, as it is in a sense refined earth. To do so, she moves much like one performing martial arts; though I am not familiar with the type that earthbending is modeled after. Although she is blind, Toph can “see” through her earthbending, in which she can feel vibrations through the ground and know what is around her.
Weaknesses: Toph cannot swim, and she has problems “seeing” when she is on non-earth surfaces such as ice. She hates flying, and cannot “see” anything if it is not in contact with the ground. Attacks like those from an airbender are hard for her to deal with since she cannot feel where the attack is coming from until it hits her. It’s honestly hard to find weaknesses in Toph, especially since she is a strong character. Her more personal weaknesses include the fact that she doesn’t know what she looks like, and even though she doesn’t seem to care most of the time, the topic does come up, and she will voice her concern over it. Other weaknesses come from her personality. She’s rude, brutally honest, and has a short temper, which can lead to conflicts with her friends.
History: Toph Bei Fong is the only child of the very wealthy and extremely influential Bei Fong family, because you totally couldn’t tell by looking at her name. Anyway, she was born blind, which caused her parents to be very over protective of her. Because she is an earthbender however, Toph can ‘see,’ but not through her eyes. She senses vibrations through the ground and anything else she can touch that is solid. When she was young, maybe, six or seven years old, she ran away from home for the first time. It was during this time that she ran into badgermoles, the original earthbenders. By imitating their movements, Toph was able to learn her earthbending. In time, she became a master of it.
After she became older, Toph grew confident enough in her earthbending to secretly sign up for Earth Rumble, an underground earthbending tournament. Despite her handicap, she was able to defeat all of her opponents and won the title of champion. This was all done without her parent’s knowledge of course, and she would often sneak out of the estate she lived at to go off and fight.
It was at one of these tournaments that she met Aang, the Avatar, and his two companions Sokka and his younger sister Katara. After some persuading, Aang was able to convince Toph to become his earthbending teacher, and she ran away from home to join him on his journey to learn to bend all four elements to defeat the Fire Lord and save the world. Even though her father witnessed firsthand her earthbending skills, he still assumed that Aang had kidnapped Toph, and he sent two accomplished earthbenders to go after her and bring her back. They managed to capture her for a little while, and they locked her up in a metal container, for earthbenders can’t bend metal. Well, many never figured it out before anyway. Since Metal is refined earth, it was possible to Toph to be her little independent stubborn self and figure out how to bend it so she could escape.
I’d go on more about her adventures, but that could take ages, so I’ll just tell you guys to watch the series because it’s awesome. In short though, she traveled with the Avatar, taught him earthbending, and helped defeat the Fire Lord’s troops when they attacked the Earth Kingdom to save the world.
