Some of you know this already, but I thought it was important to let everyone else know that my brother, River, isn't here anymore. He was the beautiful white dragon, but the first time he was here, we were born together. I called him my little brother, but you know, I think he was much, much older than he looked. It doesn't make sense, ( Read more... )

Hello Rosalind. I'm Kid, one of the new faces around lately. I didn't know River before he [pauses] poofed out of here.

Can I ask you a question? These laws you mentioned--are they the normal things like don't steal?

Hi, Kid! Are you getting along okay? This isn't such a bad place, even though some bad things happen.

Yes, exactly. We had an official vote and everything; you can't attack or kill anyone, steal anything, or burn anything down.

I'm getting along well, thank you. I still have to find a job, but I haven't gotten lost yet.

What luck. I wasn't planning on doing any of those sorts of things.

Don't worry, you'll find something. What do you like to do?

That's good! Because the Watch officers are very good at their jobs!

I'll do everything I can to keep him in my heart too. And I hope you're right--he should be somewhere that he can fly without anything in his way but the top of the sky.

I bet that's what he's doing right now. I bet he can go really high.

Yeah. That's just what a dragon is supposed to do.

And breathe fire, and kidnap fair maidens...but not River's type of dragon, I'm sure!

Your brother was a dragon?!

Sometimes! He's been here twice-the first time he was mostly a boy, but this time he was always a dragon. I still recognized him, though.

That's so cool!

What's your name? I'm Thalassa.

I think so too!

I'm Rosalind. That's a very pretty name, Thalassa!

[Leaving aside the River issue, because she's seen Rosalind work through it. However, there will be extra helpings of dessert at dinner today.]

We could do something like the party at the Park again, though it'd probably have to be indoors. Maybe a little more like a proper ball this time?

[Can they be chocolate?]

That's right, it's getting a little colder. Oh! Like prom?

[Chocolate with a side of chocolate. :P]

Prom?

Well, I'm trying to think of an indoor space we could use. We could maybe sell tickets at very reasonable prices? And relax dress code a little, I'm sure not everyone has a ball gown in the back closet.

[What a good friend.]

Right! It's a big dance when you're in school. Like a ball, but balls sound like they're for royalty. But everyone gets dressed up and dances.

You know, I think there was another ball here ages ago. I heard someone talking about it once.

Pleased to meet you, Miss(?) Rosalind. I am not strictly a new face, as I have been here for two months, but I do not believe we have communicated before. What you wrote about the Watch interests me. If you do not mind sharing, what facilities would this Watch house be equipped with?

That's right, I'm a miss! Not a Mrs.

Hmm...well, we'd need some offices, and a break and locker room for the officers, and a few cells. Not for the big crimes, but when people drink too much or steal small things.

Are there no plans for installation of a system of sorts so that watchfolk can telecommunicate faster than having to go door-to-door in case of emergencies?
