The federal government has a vested interest in smokers continuing to smoke. And drinkers continuing to drink. And motorists continuing to fuel up their automocars.

Yes, they do. That's significant tax revenue for both state and federal. It's pretty ridiculous on how much some liberal factions will shame people on buying these things when their gov. programs need the money, as you so well pointed out in your post.
