A strange conversation (I rarely have normal ones) lead me to looking into Canadian sperm bank policy. In 2004, Health Canada made it illegal to pay for sperm. You can still donate, but it is illegal to get paid for it. As a result, sperm is now mostly imported from the States ( Read more... )

Does it count as prostitution, and the regulation was made to clarify this, perhaps?

No, they would have to redefine what prostitution is and things would get confusing one you start mixing up sperm donations and acts of sexual relations. If a donation of sperm is an act of a sexual relation then when a doctor that you are paying for asks for a sperm sample, you are paying money and having sexual relations.

I don't think they redefined sexual relations and prostitution in Canada in 2004 or there would have been more of an outcry.

Anyways, laws are meant to protect, and this law protects no one, if anything it hurts people.
