Gohan invites Piccolo to come to his sixth birthday party. That evening, Piccolo is forced to discover the importance of commitment, loyalty, family, and love.
Aww! This fanfiction is so sweet! It is a lovely gen fanfiction about family and friendship. It takes place during Goku's absence and explores Gohan's feelings about his father and Piccolo's place as a mentor and friend. I particularly liked how Gohan's disappointment in Piccolo is touched on in the fanfiction. Yes, Gohan's literary voice is written as more mature than his described age (six years old in this story) but nonetheless, his frustration and expression of that frustration rang true for me even if other moments did not. I also really liked Piccolo's thoughts on Chi-Chi and how he viewed Gohan and Chi-Chi as a joined pair. Despite possible differences he may have with Chi-Chi, Piccolo does not describe her as a detachable other. Piccolo is a father figure in this story; I think it would be interesting if his role as father figure is again investigated in another story, this one about the transition when Goku returns.
