As far as I know, it's never been a particularly religious holiday, or at least it hasn't been in recent history for Euro-American folks. (The USSR even instituted official New Year's celebrations as a secular replacement for Christmas). We're basically celebrating the fact that the Earth has again circled around to the same point in its orbit. Arbitrary, but I think pretty harmless.
