I know it's awful, but it really isn't the end of your ability to ride him. These days there are so many options. Speak to farrier and vet and they will be able to work out a program for him. Def go for the xrays - it's good to see exactly what you are dealing with.
re the side job - wow! That would be amazing work, you'd need a hell of a stomach, I think. Very underrated work. People never think about the people who clean up and make something liveable or useable again, hey.

It sucks. It's not your fault.
Boofy (28.5) has devil's claw and glucausomine, there are good options, the shots are apparently very good.

oh man...unbelievably shitty news! so sorry. i hope you are able to find aprogram that works for him. also...$400 per xray???? that's insane! they;re like $60 here and i thought that was a lot...
