APPEARANCE: Ta-da Akihiko is all of 5'9", a bit on the skinny side, but not to be underestimated. As the captain of the boxing team and something of a freak about training he's got some muscle on his bones. While he can be overwhelmed by larger foes, he's rather fast. He has white hair, and a bandage over his left eye that never seems to go away.
He's a pretty snappy dresser and is concerned about how he looks. He's not exactly a freak about it and that everything must be perfect, but he certainly likes to look good.
PERSONALITY:
Akihiko's personality is greatly linked to the death of his sister. The orphanage he lived in as a child caught fire, trapping his younger sister inside. The adults at the orphanage kept Akihiko from returning to the fire to try to save his sister, if only to save Akihiko from harm, Akihiko saw it as a failure within himself. He often says this made him weak and that he was helpless to save those he cared about, which triggered an unshakable drive in him. For an 18 year old he is extremely mature (though not above letting go for a while to have fun) and something of a father figure to the underclassmen in his canon. His general concern for the well-being of others extends to all, even strangers and rarely plays favorites (with one exception).
Though despite his maturity and level headedness, he is an extremely emotional individual. His friendships are very important to him, and has a very deep seated sense of right and wrong, almost to the point of being pig headed about it. While he is not about to force others to see his way of thinking, he will not sway from it himself. His cool composure can break almost instantly when he is confronted with situations he feels strongly about, in canon, when S.E.E.S. is sent to fight Strega, the group that killed his childhood friend Shinjiro, his cool, almost professional composure is completely absent, as he expresses the wish to kill Strega for what they had done to Shinjiro.
A case could be made for the nobility of character in Akihiko, however despite his exceptional personality traits he is still an average 18 year old, fumbling with girls and concerned about his appearance. Shigenori Soejima (the designer of the game) says Akihiko spends a good deal of time on what he wears and how he presents himself.
Akihiko represents the Emperor Arcana in the major arcana in the the traditional tarot deck, words that are often associated with the Emperor, according to Wikipeida, are; "fathering, stability, authority, power, common sense, egocentrism, leadership, experience, and inflexibility". These are all extremely relevant to Akihiko's personality.

AU HISTORY:
Akihiko Sanada was orphaned at a young age with his younger sister Miki. The circumstances of this are unknown, but it would appear his oldest memories are of the orphanage, and not of his parents. It is in this orphange he meets and befriends Shinjiro Aragaki, who became a life long friend. The two of them took it upon themselves to raise Miki, obviously the people at the orphanage did their job, but the three children functioned as their own little family unit, the boys trying to do what was best for Miki and often disagreeing. One noteable instance where Shinjiro took it upon himself to steal a toy for Miki, but learning of its dishonest origins Akihiko beat the snot out of his friend and made him return it. However their little family was short lived, the orphanage they were raised in was destroyed in a fire, taking his sister's life. The children of the orphanage were relocated and his childhood was an average one with the exception of its tragic culmination of events. The death of Akihiko's sister left him feeling useless and unable to save the things that were important to him.
Though rather than stagnating in his loss, Akihiko takes it as a cue to better himself. While attending public schools, he joined a boxing club, rising to team captain in a matter of months, even at a younger age. It is hard to say if his success within the club was because of a natural inclination towards the sport, or his relentless training. It was not uncommon for him to sustain injuries because he would not allow his body to rest between training sessions. Regardless of where it came from, his talent was noticed by the Academy and he was offered a scholarship to attend Reims as a high school freshman.
He understood the honor it was to be able to attend such a school, especially when he wouldn't be able to otherwise due to his origins - but was extremely reluctant to leave his childhood friend, Shinjiro. Though, understanding that this was really an honor and shouldn't be taken for granted - he accepted.

As expected, the nurse finally got tired of me.
Something about taking better care of myself and not understanding anatomical limitations and pushing myself too far. I sort of stopped listening to be honest, I just wanted her to pop my shoulder back in the socket.
I know it's her job to scold me about this kind of thing but if my practice habits haven't changed in the the time I've been here, and the number of times I've been to the nurse for this kind of thing. I'd maybe take it as a hint. I know it's her job, but a dislocated shoulder isn't anything I'm concerned about.
I guess I'm more surprised it took this long, broken hands, dislocated shoulders, concussions. I mean, I've run her through the gamut of basic medical training. I'm no worse than anyone else on the team, we all work hard. And we all get hurt sometimes.
Maybe she was having a bad day or something.
Whatever the reason, she definitely pushed way harder than she needed to to get it back in there. I guess I had that coming.
