That's an interesting theory. One exception might not disprove it.
There may be some other factor your niece shares to get the same result.

That's an interesting idea. People can learn to ignore, or at least deal with, heat and cold so it makes sense that there might be an element of learned behavior in feeling it to begin with. Buddhist monks learn to raise their body temperature when meditating in cold rooms.

It also might be worth considering whether stressful living conditions result in changes in the body that make it more tolerant of cold and heat.
