I've recently decided that I like listening to stuff when I'm walking/biking/driving. And since a) I don't pay to subscribe to any music streaming services (nor is my private collection very impressive), and b) the speakers in my car are so crappy that playing almost any kind of music on it is an insult to the music, I've been listening to ( Read more... )

Hi, fellow podcast listener whose LJ I still read sometimes apparently!

Some of the standard recommendations for commute-friendly podcasts are 99% Invisible and Invisibilia (episodes vary in length, 10-60 mins but many are in the 20-25 min range). I'd suggest the Structural Integrity episode of 99% Invisible.

If you love The Moth, you might enjoy The Memory Palace. Lyrical retellings of historical events. They're pretty short, 3-8 minutes long, but you could cue up a few at a time.

If you can go for longer episodes and just listen to the individual segments, RadioLab is incredible. So is Love + Radio, and it's only half an hour long too, but it requires somewhat more attention than it sounds like you have during a commute.

Greetings, fellow reader who hasn't switched over to DreamWidth apparently! :)

99% Invisible has gotten several votes, so that's at the top of my list now. I just started a RadioLab this morning, and it's currently sounding very promising.

Those successes make your other suggestions more valuable, so thanks!

There are a few podcasts I listen to, generally in the car while I am working but don't have a ride.

The Best of Car Talk.

Mission Log - A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast. Two guys who are reviewing every episode of Star Trek for "morals, meanings, and messages, and to see if the episode stands up to the test of time". They are near the end of season 6 of Star Trek - The Next Generation.

The 365 Days of Astronomy

The Rachel Maddow podcast. It's the audio of her nightly show.

The Jodcast. Astronomy podcast out of Jodrell Bank.

Planetary radio.

Big Picture Science.

Renaissance Festival Music.

Music from 100 Years Ago.

Star Talk Radio.

Space Music Podcast

Point of Inquiry

The Night Sky This Month, from the same people who do the Jodcast.

American Freethought podcast.

Sky Tour Podcasts from Sky & Telescope magazine.

As you can see my list is astronomy heavy.

That's quite the list! Good to have some sky stuff there. I will be (slowly) checking it all out. :)

Thanks! I don't get to listen to every episode in the time that I wish but eventually I do. When Mission Log gets into Deep Space Nine I'll probably slow down as I was not into Deep Space Nine like I was into Star Trek and ST-TNG.

There are a few podcasts I have listened to just one episode as it had a guest I specifically wanted to listen to such as Dr Aubrey de Grey.

I'm not a fan of podcasts, I've tried listening to many and it's rare that they stick to a subject I like over a number of episodes.

What I'm listening to now while I'm driving for Lyft or doing boring things like ironing laundry:

99% Invisible. Started at the first episode and I like that it's short and to a specific point

Alton Browncast -- he restarted it and is talking to people he finds interesting, from stage magicians to bar managers

Still Untitled, Adam Savage and the Tested Crew. They aren't good at programming but they are very good at being nerds/makers with OCD levels of movie and prop interests

WellRED. It's a progressive and very fucking redneck podcast by three standup comedians and authors. Trae Crowder is probably my favorite comedian until Chappelle comes back. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu5znlyX9uY

I wonder if it's just that there are so many bad podcasts. Or a lot more people who are not me who are actually entertained by listening to people converse with each other.

My main listening time is when I'm bike-commuting. I know the route; I don't have many cars to deal with; my headphones still let in plenty of external sounds; and it keeps the idle part of my brain from wandering to less-useful things to stress about. I generally have about 25min x 10 trips per week. If I add in a 10 min walk to main campus when I have meetings that's a little more. Or the occasional multi-hour road trip, when I really need something to help keep me awake.

Thanks for the suggestions. Missing some more good comedy so I'm gonna try out that last one sooner.

Yeah, I basically can't deal with anything McElroy in terms of podcasts.
