Snow in the Suburbs

Some of you know how envious I am of your snowy winter landscapes. I came across this poem and thought I'd share it. While I think Hardy is a much better novelist than poet, I like this poem. I mean, what's not to like? Snow, plus cats getting rescued! Pretty cheerful for Hardy!

You are always welcome in our winter wonderland! LOL! Expected to get winter in New York and driving to New Hampshire, but alas, not a flake. Thanks for sharing. S

Thanks, Sherrie, but I think Alaska might be a little TOO much snow for me! Glad you had fun on your trip, and looking forward to hearing more details.

Hey, I actually looked for a photograph of the Lights on the Lake, but couldn't find any. You should post a picture!

I beginning to think you're more of a romantic than you like to let on.

Nope, not me! I just really like poetry, which is definitely not always romantic.

BTW, I'm enjoying the icons you made, as you can see!

See we define romantic differently. I find all poetry romantic by nature. Not necessarily schoompy, but romantic.

I'm glad you like the icons.

I was going to repost the first stanza and illustrate it from my vast collection of pictures of snow. (Every year I promise myself I won't take pictures when it snows, because how many pictures of the same backyard buried in snow do I need? Every year, as soon as it snows, there I am, crouching in the doorway, going click click click.) I've done this before, but since the most recent round of LJ 'improvements,' I can no longer figure out how it works.

I have not, however, given up. FanSee

I hope you figure it out, Fansee, because I'd love to see them! I actually wanted to post a snowy picture with this poem, but didn't really have time to find one. I maybe wanted one of a (warm, well-fed) cat looking out at the cold, snowy night!

I always go to the LJ codes to figure out how to post pictures, but if they are your own pics, then I think you have to have a host site before you can post them on LJ. If so, that is WAY too complicated for me because I'm an LJ novice! Maybe someone here (like Arness) can tell you how to do it.

Lovely evocative images, which show us why it is better to be a cat than a sparrow...and of course this group would make the same choice to take in the wide eyed, thin cat that Gardy did. It was clearly a vegetarian cat, since it did not eat the floudering sparrow, don't you agree?

Arwen, who is reading a Child's Christmas in Wales, and dreaming tonight, of when Christmases were white.

Happy Holidays, everyone.

Um, that should have said Hardy....not Gardy.

I don't think cats can be successful vegetarians - maybe he was just SOL!

"A Child's Christmas in Wales" has always been my favorite Christmas story, from back when I was a kid. We'd read it every Christmas. I even have a tape of Dylan Thomas reading it somewhere around the house. Will have to dig it up, or make SO read it to me (I still love being read to). Last year I found and posted the URL to a site that had and audio of Thomas reading the poem, but it's defunct this year. Too bad. It made a nice cyber-Christmas present.

Yes that would have been grand. I remember that one too.

Nice to see you posted. :-)
