My trip to the Golden Gate Park rose garden, part 2.
An older and double-cupped variety.
"Love and Peace"? That would make sense; the original Peace rose is yellow with faint blush pink. If these are an update to Peace, then...but I didn't take notes.
I know I took a picture of some "Chrysler Imperial 1953" but I forget which ones...anything very precise and deep red.
You'd think that was a camellia. You'd be wrong.
"Queen Elizabeth"? Interestingly, that striated effect is the result of a virus that infects the roots of the plant. When you splice this onto clean rootstock, it comes out a dull liver-pink.
Several generations of scientists have been trying to engineer a blue rose, which doesn't exist in nature. Our greatest hope is splicing rose genes with those of a delphinium, but the color mechanisms in the two species are so far too different. Some scientists managed a few years ago, but it wasn't practical and they didn't breed true anyway.
IMPOSTORS! What are those poppies doing there! (Um, providing a middle-ground compositional element between the minis and the full bushes...)
And finally, here's Duckie trying to get us to take a hint.
