Why the hell do people have to write songs in alternate tunings
Because they sound SOOOO cool.
My advice? Invest in purchasing the Boss TU-2 pedal. I think it's the most important pedal an artist can have. I have one, and not only does it power all my pedals, but it makes tuning, standard and open, more easier than...*insert clever metaphor here*
I hate changing tunings so when i play a song thats in drop D i learn it in standard by just playing for example 555 as 355... but, do you know how to play these power chords (that are in drop d) in standard tuning?
I think one of the main reasons people play in lower tunings is because it matches their singer's key better. Either that or because 90% of the songs in Drop D are in D Dorian, which means the song is in the key of C, and in order to hit that low C power chord they need to tune down some more. Anyway, the best way to tune to drop D while in standard (In my opinion) is to hit a natural harmonic on the 7th fret of the low E string and then play the A string open while the harmonic is ringing on top, and then tune the low E string down until the two pitches sound the same. But yea, Drop C is a pain. You basically have to tune the low string to Drop D, then tune your guitar to the low E string that's been dropped as if you were tuning your guitar to standard, and then do the drop d trick AGAIN, and you should be in drop C. To much work to do inbetween songs if you're playing a live show. If you have a song to play that's in Drop C but all the others are simply in drop D and you don't have another guitar to tune differently, the best idea
