I vote mac. I have had mine since my freshman year as a refurbished computer and it is still great to use. THat and if you buy the warranty (highly recommended) they will fix your computer, and if they can't, they will send you a new one. That and macs don't get viruses. They are also really user friendly and apple is just a great company. so yeah, I vote mac. A little more expensive but so worth it.
I hate the Mac touch pads. Be sure you like them or will always carry a mouse. The lack of easy right click and clearly defined buttons drives me mad. If software is the issue, you can always buy Windows and dual boot.
Dells are solid. I've had a few laptops and have been happiest with the two that are Dells.
Don't get an alienware, they're crazy overpriced.
I hope you can at least get a good dinner or something out of your boy for valentine's. Maybe try to convince him to go next weekend when there's less of a crowd? I took Andrea to see Avatar in 3D last week because she's home this weekend for the Chinese new year. Nerd dates are awesome.
