So, I noticed on Facebook an author is promoting the sale of copies of her fanzines. Before the advent of sites like AO3, the only way to get a fix for your fanfiction addiction was through fanzines. It was my understanding that the cost of fanzines was to cover their production and postage and that no profit was made from them in order to negate

I guess it really depends. Before, it was to cover the cost of production and postage, as you say. I never made a penny on my zines, just the opposite. However, if someone wants ato pay for a PDF copy, I guess it's their nickel. I wouldn't do it.
