Mary Jane Watson sighed and looked out the window. Pete had promised to meet her, but as usual, he was unforgivably late. Why she put up with this, she couldn't tell you. She did love him, there was no doubt, but her coffee was cold, and the barista was beginning to eye her with open annoyance.
"Hey, can I sit here?" MJ snapped out of her daze, and saw that another red headed woman was standing behind the only empty seat in the coffee shop, waiting for her permission to sit down.
"Oh, sure." MJ sighed, taking a sip of the coffee and wincing.
"Do you think they'd re-heat this if I asked?" She wondered aloud, looking at the cup and grimacing.
"I don't know. I've never tried. I'm Penny, by the way." Penny introduced herself.
"I'm Mary Jane, nice to meet you." MJ shook Penny's offered hand, and they lapsed into silence.
"So," Mary Jane began, breaking the stillness that had fallen between them, "what brings you here?"
"I'm waiting for my boyfriend. He's in a business meeting." MJ's ears perked up a little bit. Penny said business meeting the same way MJ herself told people Pete's class was running late. It didn't mean his class was running late.
"Same." MJ replied, and set her cup down on the table so she wouldn't be tempted to take another swig of the revolting mix. "Except, my boyfriend's in a class over at NYU right now."
"Oh. That's impressive." The sound of screaming caught the girls attention as it floated in from down the street.
"I'm going to check that out." Penny stuttered after a moment. The perk of being the Villain's girlfriend was that she never had to worry about being taken hostage. Heroes didn't do that sort of thing.
"It was nice meeting you!" Penny called across the shop as she ran out the door.
Mary Jane followed her, minutes later.
