It had just grown dark and Vicki suspected that Henry had just woken up. She smiled thinking of him, but the smile quickly turned into a frown as she thought of the woman making his life hell.

Christina.

The hardest part was the fact that Henry still cared deeply for his maker. She was still so strongly part of him. Vicki knew she couldn’t let him kill Christina. That might be too much for her Prince. And she certainly couldn’t let Christina hurt him… or Coreen or Mike. If anyone was going to die it would be Vicki. She had come to that conclusion the moment that she realized that Christina was the vampire that had spooked Henry. Christina. Vicki’s best friend when she was from when Vicki was little through when she was in high-school had been Christina, her faculty advisor in college had been Christina, and now the ex-lover of one of the few people she truly cared for- who was trying to kill her and everyone around her- was also a Christina. Life markers. There had been a gap between Christina Stuart and this new Christina, but it still worked. Christina Clairnoir, Vicki’s best friend, hadn’t liked Mike. Tina, as Vicki called her, had been very possessive. Vicki’s mom loved Christina because she kept boys away from Vicki.

Ten years since she last saw Christina. Vicki could hardly believe she had been alone for so long. No. Vicki smiled as Coreen came bustling in with coffee and breakfast. She wasn’t alone. She had Coreen, Mike, and Henry. Henry. Christina. Vicki’s smile fell. What could she do to help Henry? “Vicki?” Coreen asked, “I have a woman on line one who says she had lost her best friend and wants to hire you to find her.” Coreen told her with her usual perky smile.

Vicki looked over had her assistant incredulously, “We only have one line, Coreen.”

Coreen’s smile grew, “Well, yes, but the clients don’t have to know that!” she exclaimed as she handed Vicki her coffee and the phone. “And watch your temper- try not to insult another client just because she’s an airhead or say… condescending.” Vicki gave Coreen a look and Coreen shrugged, “I’m just trying to help. They don’t like it when you tell them to ‘come back when they dig their head out of their butt’.”

Smiling Vicki answered, “Victoria Nelson speaking.”

“Hello,” A smooth voice replied, “I was hoping you could help me. I’m looking for my best friend. She is about 5’5”, mahogany hair that she dies dirty blond, and has a tendency towards violence. I lost her ten years ago because I was jealous and stupid. Her name is Toria?” Vicki squealed. Yes, squealed with joy.

“Tina!”

“How ever did you know?” Christina Clairnoir answered and Vicki could tell that the woman was laughing at her. “How are you, Toria? I’ve missed you.”

“Oh, I’m fine.” Vicki responded, grinning.

“Really?” Christina asked, “Toria, I wanted to see you. I’m busy all of tomorrow, but tomorrow night, maybe? We could meet in the park on 27th and Maple? By the statue of the horse?” She pleaded gently.

Vicki frowned. Christina sounded desperate. Vicki was about to say yes when she remembered Henry. Henry needed her. But Christina… “I’ll be there at eight o’clock.” Vicki told her friend. She could always help Henry after Christina left to sleep. After the two said their good byes, Vicki sent Coreen home and then went into her bedroom and got out the scrapbook that she and Christina had made in their junior year of high school. At the beginning were the most recent photos. Coreen, Henry, and Mike smiled out at her along with a few other faces. Then her ten years knowing Mike, most of it on the force. Paul Deeds. Vicki’s mother. Farther back she found Christina Stuart, Mike, and herself in an academic setting. Graduation, parties, and the stupidity of college. Finally, there was Christina. Christina Clairnoir was four inches taller than Vicki, slim and beautiful. She had black-brown hair that fell in wild ringlets halfway down her back and deep brown eyes. Vicki used to think that Christina looked like an elf or a faerie. There were pictures of the two doing practicing gymnastics, riding Christina’s horses, and just hanging out. There was a huge collection of memories just Toria and Tina. Tina and Toria.

Victoria smiled and put the scrapbook away. She dug in her closet and found a suitable outfit for reconnecting with your long lost best friend- or at least tried to- and then headed out the door. When she arrived at the park, there was Christina sitting under an oak tree the way the two always had in the past. The number of nights spent under the oak in Christina’s yard was something Vicki had missed the most. Just the two of them and the stars. “Toria!” almost faster than Vicki could see, Christina was at her side. Hugging Christina close, Vicki could feel the tension ease out of the brunette’s shoulders.

“I’ve missed you, Tina.” Vicki murmured into the playful curls. “I never got over your leaving.”

Christina pulled back a bit with a frown on her face, “I would have thought Mike helped with that.” She snapped, but then looked down, “I’m sorry, Toria. I missed my last meal and am a bit cranky.” She lifted her head, a beautiful smile on her face, and asked, “How about we go to dinner. I’m paying- you chose where. You know how indecisive I can be.” She ended with a sheepish grin.

Vicki took a step back. She thought of the photo album, she thought of the years that had passed. Vicki had been eight when they met. Christina had always said she got her growth spurt early. She always said that she went to a private school with weird hours. She always said her parents were really busy. She always said she wasn’t that hungry. She always said she’d never leave. She had promised that she’d never leave. The only thing Christina ever promised. “You look beautiful, Tina.” Vicki remarked her eyes filling, “As beautiful as the day I met you. You haven’t changed a bit.” Vicki looked away. Christina recognized it as an angry, frustrated motion that usually appeared when someone lied to Vicki or wouldn’t tell her something. “But you know what, I already ate.” Vicki looked back at her friend who was now quite confused. Vicki moved into her and arched her neck, tossing her hair to the right; Vicki locked eyes with Christina, “Don’t ever lie to me again.” She hissed using her hand to bring Christina’s lips to her throat.

Tears filled Christina’s eyes as she sunk her fangs into Vicki. Leaning against the oak, Vicki pulled her best friend a little bit closer. When Christina finished drinking she healed Vicki and met the P.I.’s eyes. tears were now streaming down both their faces. “You didn’t come for Henry did you?” Vicki asked with a watery smile. Christina just shook her head gently. “I can’t let you hurt him.” Vicki told her, touching her face, “And I can’t let you hurt him.” Vicki’s hand dropped.

Christina nodded, “Will you visit me?” she asked tearfully. “I’m in Vancouver. I’ve never been far. I kept my promise, Toria- I never left. I won’t leave you.” Christina looked of in to the distance Vicki thought maybe into the past, “I thought he would hurt you. He has hurt others in the past.” Vicki reached out and brought Christina’s face back to her. Christina sank gracefully to the ground. Vicki lay down with her head resting in Christina’s lap.

“He won’t hurt me. He’s still a boy in some ways. The same seventeen year old boy you turned.” Vicki pressed her lips together. “And he still loves you.”

Christina gave a bitter laugh, “It’s been nearly five hundred years. He should find someone else- oh wait, he has. My best friend.” Vicki smiled at the sarcasm, but then Christina’s face became serious, “Come to me Vicki? I miss you. As old as I am, as much as I’ve seen, there has never been anyone quite like you.” She asked softly.

“I’ll come, Christina- you don’t know how many trust issues I developed when you left, but I’ll come.” Vicki promised. Both rose to their feet and were holding hands, smiling, happy to be together and ready to say good byes when suddenly Christina threw Vicki behind her. Vicki’s back hit the tree as Christina growled into the darkness. “This is beginning too be a problem.” Vicki muttered as Henry stepped from the shadows. “Nope, this is a disaster. I don’t think this situation could be worse.” Vicki grumbled as she stood.

Coreen and Mike stepped forward and Vicki noticed that Henry was holding the Illuminacion del sol. Mike was holding a sword, and Coreen had her flamethrower. “Let her go, Christina. It’s me you want.” Henry commanded in that nervous, but arrogant tone he had.

“Me and my big mouth.” Vicki rolled her eyes. “Christina?”

“I’m sorry, Victoria. There is only so much I can do.” The brunette responded.

Vicki put a hand on her arm, “You won’t be able to keep your promise if you are dead. Don’t underestimate them. After all, they do work with me.” Even more quietly she said, “I don’t want to loose you again.”

“Tina?” Mike asked, the only on e of the three who seem ed capable of coherent speech, “Is that you? I thought you said you were leaving be- wait… you’re Henry’s Christina?”

Christina laughed softly, “Yes, Michael. It’s me. I’m really more Toria’s Christina now, though. I can truly say, Henry that you ate not the one I want. I met Toria when she was eight and we were inseparable until her first year of college. I was a bit to jealous of Michael and had to put distance between us. When I returned to find her she had moved here and was spending time with another vampire. I thought she needed protection-“ Christina paused and laughed joyfully, “And I was jealous again.” Vicki smiled with her and Mike and Coreen relaxed. “She’s yours for now, little Prince, but remember that she will always be mine underneath. I will always be part of her. Don’t try to take her from me or I will remind you why vampires cannot live together.” Christina warned the younger vampire with a growled. And with a kiss on Vicki’s cheek, she was gone.

“So.” Vicki started shoving her hands in her pockets, “Chinese, anyone?”
