Nanoe novel part 11

Trinity was watching cartoons nestled against her grandfather when her brother woke in the morning.

“Gwampa, I don’t like commercials.” She mumbled sleepily around her thumb. He nodded and reached for the remote to change the channel. After she had woken about three hours ago, she hadn’t wanted to be alone. And with her brother still having been asleep she had looked for more lively company.

Dr. James walked into the living room from the kitchen, with three mugs. One was topped with whipped cream, which he handed to Trin, who sat up.

“Your Aunt made fresh coffee about an hour ago. There’ll be muffins soon too. Seems she doesn’t get ruffled when her kitchen gets trashed.”

“Yeah, she’s like that. Trin, you okay kiddo?” He asked. The hollow look she gave him scared him, but she nodded then turned her attention back to the cartoon she was watching. It was the one with the ponies she liked so much.

“Michael, that you up already?” Beth smiled a little as she peeked into the room. “You want coffee or hot chocolate?”

“I’m fine for the moment Aunt Beth.” Thinking he looked at Eric. “Think you can watch Trin a moment. I have to talk to my grandfather.”

“No.” Trin almost spilled her hot chocolate as she tried to hold his arm tighter. “No want him to go anywheres.” She knew she was sounding like a baby, but he was making her feel safe. It was something she didn’t want to have disappear just yet.

“Trin, it will only be a few minutes, and I promise we’ll just be in the hall.” Michael rubbed her shoulder lightly as he leaned over the couch. “You’ll be okay. I promise, we’ll be right here.”

“Pwomise?” Her shoulders hitched and their grandfather took the mug from her setting it on the coffee table before scooping her up into a hug.

“Hey, remember what I told you? He’s gone for a little while. Munnin and Huginn are at your house making sure he does the tasks I set out for him to do. The others are doing the same. If things don’t improve your family will be coming with me. Until then you’re safe here.”

“If we go wif you… you’ll really get me a kitty?”

“We’ll go pick one up after we go buy you new clothes. Anything you want. I will spare no expense for my grandchildren.” He smiled at her getting her to smile back at him. “Goes for you too Michael. You’ve seen how I spoil Tony, anything you want. I have fifteen years to make up for after all.”

“I appreciate that, but I kind of want to know what I did yesterday. And I want to know what’s going one here.”

He nodded a little as he stood placing Trinity on the couch handing her back her mug. “We’ll be back shortly, then maybe we should get dressed so you can go see your mother. How does that sound.”

Trinity’s face lit up at that. “Mommy’s otay? Can she come here wif us? Pwease? Miss Mommy,” she whimpered a little.

“If her doctor says she can I don’t see why not.”

Turning back to the TV when she heard one of her favorite characters speak up. Michael sighed, the cartoon would occupy her attention until breakfast was ready. It was something she didn’t get to watch that often. Mostly because it made too much noise for Edward to handle even though she was the quietest person Mike knew. Walking to the hall he looked at the older man a moment.

“You have doubts on our intentions don’t you Michael?” he was smiling softly.

“Yes, especially with Trin. What is so special about my sister?” He managed not to let his voice get too loud. “She’s been through so much already. Can’t she have a normal life? That’s what Mom was trying to give her. All three of us.” Mike sighed. “Too bad Dad’s an ass and won’t let that happen.”

“Your father wasn’t always like this. I could tell when I was showing him the error of his ways, took a while to see what my daughter was trying to save… As for Trinity, she’s something that other kind have lacked in centuries. I just hope that everything around her has not ruined that. It would be nice to have that innocence back within the mix.”

“So you’re planning on using her for your own plans?” Mike couldn’t help but be a little angered at this. “Ever think she needs more than to be used? Dad used her to keep Mom and I in line. Mom uses her to keep her sanity. She’s been on meds the last four years. She’s been hiding them but I know she’s taking something. Only one looking out for her has been me in the last three years. She’s gotten hurt whenever I haven’t been around to help her.” It was a fact that Mike couldn’t let slide. Not this time at least. Trinity and Sarah had become his responsibility the night his father had tried to kill his mother.

He watched his grandson. The fifteen-year-old had a lot on his shoulders for his young age, and with how he was talking it had been that way for a while. He wondered if Alex or Beth knew, knowing how the boy was trying to be strong he doubted it. “We wouldn’t use her without your permission. Seems you’ve become the parent.”

“Someone had to while they were going through the motions.” This threw Mike off. He had been ready to have to fight to keep every one thinking about the best interests of the girls.

“Then allow me to ease some of the burden. After we see your mother how about you and I bring your sister back here and you help me house hunt. I’m thinking I should find a place where you and your sisters will feel safe. That way you can still have your childhood knowing that another incident like this won’t happen.”

“You’re going to move here?”
