Sipping his black coffee, Xander stared at the blank sheet of paper. Switching the cup of coffee for a ballpoint pen, he began to nibble on the pen cap. Then, he hastily began to scribble.
Dear Spike.
How have you been? It’s been strange not seeing-.
No. That didn’t sound right. That was casual, and after what Xander had done, casual just wouldn’t work.
Xander turned to the next page in his notebook. It was already three quarters used with the same failed letter attempts.
Alexander, you are a damn fool. All he did was tell you he loved you, and you ran like a scared puppy. He thought. Throwing his paper cup away, he decided to make his way back to his motel room.
The only thing keeping him away from the man he loved, was his stubborn pride. If he turned up now, all that would do was show how stupid he truly was.
A young couple, both about seventeen years old, walked by, holding hands. Xander blinked back tears, refusing to cry. His palm began to tingle, and his skin went cold, despite the June heat.
Spike, do you know that I was just too nervous to admit I love you? he thought, opening the door. A thick musty scent greeted him.
The room was tiny, only having the bare necessities. A bed and a toilet, and not very clean ones at that.
He hadn’t seen his friends in over six months. Letters from them were piling up but Xander refused to open them. All that would accomplish was making him run back to the arms of a man he didn’t deserve.
A piece of paint fell off the ceiling, landing by his head. He winced, flicking it onto the faded red carpet.
Shifting to his feet, he picked up the letter closest to him. He had no clue how they had managed to find him. Loneliness was getting the best of him, and all he wanted was a small taste of home.
He scanned the letter, hearing the news back home. Robin and Faith had finally gotten married. Two slayers had been lost to a Polgara Demon. But it was a single passage towards the end that had caught his eye.
Spike hasn’t been himself since you left. He willingly moved into my basement but we rarely see him. He prefers to be alone.
Xander-he still loves you.
Much to his surprise, he began to cry. He hadn’t cried since the first night in that awful motel. What was making him cry like this? It made absolutely no sense.
All he wanted was to be in the arms of the man who still loved him, despite the fact he had run away. All he wanted was to see his family again.
Picking up the old rotary phone, he anxiously dialed, the first call he had made from the hotel room since checking in. His hands trembled, as it rang once, twice, three times.
“Hello?”
“Willow?”
“Yes?”
“This is…”
“Oh my God, Xander!”
“Wils. I’m coming home.”
