I just finished the series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend it. It is an awesome fantasy series with a collection of characters that you can love and hate. Sometimes at the same time.
There was one interesting factor of the series. Alec and Magnus, both homosexual, start a relationship over the course of the three books. Clare seems to major in angst, so these two don’t have an easy ride. And when they do get together, it is under the shadow of war. But is still manages to be light-hearted and perfect in a weird way. But neither do any other characters in this book. It’s just so twisted and lovely and fucking beautiful.
And when Clare killed of Max Lightwood, a nine-year-old boy, I cried. I don’t know why it hit me so hard, but I did. I had to put down the book and cry because it hurt. And the way she portrayed the family member’s response was even more painful. I understand it was an important part of the story. But it was a hard part of the story to get over.
And the villain, Valentine...ugh. Sometimes, he performed these horrible experiments on any subject he could find. Including his own children. It took everything I had not to yell out “HOJO!!!!!!11!” And these experiments nearly destroy the two main characters and any chance they have to be together.
So please...please read this series. The first book is called City of Bones. Yes, it has vampires and werewolves in it. But they are not the main focus of the story. And they definitely don’t sparkle. It makes for a good read.
