Landlord literally said to me that "things would get a lot easier for me" if I "wore nice pantyhose". 'Or else' was implied, he couldn't have shouted 'for him' louder than it was with him just looking at me like that. And I, I am an idiot, because I panicked, because I considered, because I lost control, because I ruined myself, because I cried and ( Read more... )

*hugs you*

Nothing. Nothing nothing nothing. No houses available. A few rooms, but the current owners have to meet you and like you most out of EVERYONE replying, so that could take a while. And I thought the last landlord was bad. :(((

"Current owners" should be "the other people who live there".

Well that would just be too logical.

AAAAAHHH. What the FUCK?

How is this person still running around free and not in jail? How has he not been caught doing something horrible yet?

Easier said than done, and also very obvious, but get the hell out as soon as you can. That is toxic and dangerous.

Other option: if your security deposit wasn't that much, maybe it's worth foregoing it just to have that lock.

I suppose temporarily living with the boyfriend is out of the question?

The boyfriend was actually supposed to live here with me, but the landlord suddenly withdrew his agreement a week after we moved in and so he's had to temporarily crash at his mother's. She's reluctantly agreeing with letting me stay the night there every now and then, but it's really hard for a nearly-seventy-year-old woman to suddenly have two extra people in her small house - so yes, out of the question. :(

I don't know how he can still be free. He never had a tenant before and his wife died years ago, so basically the only people he's around much are his children (they're extremely obedient, asking him if they can go up the stairs or drink milk, coming to him to let him know the exact moment they're going to bed) - maybe that's why he's been under the radar. He was fired a few times, I think - but he isn't clear on why.

(He can force any lock I install, he has all the material for it in the shed, and I'm absolutely sure he'll do it. And the deposit is four hundred euros more than I can afford losing.)

Since I live in the same house he lives in, I have practically no rights by law (unless I've lived there for nine months or more, which I haven't). He's not allowed to come into my room, but I can't prove it every time and the police has already talked to him.

Thanks for the link! Unfortunately Den Haag is two hours away from my obligations here, but thanks for trying. :)

My friends can't let anyone stay for more than a few nights, either.

I'm here via Sam, with hugs and a fun possible evidence-gathering measure:

Perhaps a motion activated camera disguised as a clock aimed at your door when you're gone would buoy your case while you try to gather funds. It's self-contained, so no computer need be harmed; motion-activated, so it won't run down batteries with unnecessary taping; and it's a normal room-decor piece, so it won't alert suspicions.

That is awesome. Thanks for the tip, I'm off to see if they deliver to the Netherlands.

I took a peek, and from what I can tell, they do. If not, let me know -- I'm happy to do some more research.

That's awful, and I hope you can find a better situation soon. What a creeper ( ... )

A fire and water proof safe is actually a good thing to have in general. When I was little we had a house-fire and literally the only thing left was what was in the firesafe. You can stash it under your bed or chain it to the bed frame so that'll either prevent or at least slow down someone trying to take it.

Here's something else that might help you out. If he won't let you install a lock, try a door jack. They look like this (sorry, this is a US company but it'll give you the idea)

There's also a more subtle kind that jams the door and makes a racket if someone tries to open it. It is also much cheaper since money's a concern for you.

I'd love to have one of these (especially the second one with the noise) and I'm putting them in my favourites, but right now I have a sliding door (which directly leads to stairs, upstairs is my room), so I doubt this'll keep him out. Thank you for the advice, anyway!

Aaaand I'm going to see if I can find an affordable safe like that tomorrow, as soon as the shops open. It seems like something I should definitely have, considering I've always lived with housemates and have moved around a lot.

Thank you for the reply and the links, they're very much appreciated.

If you have a sliding door could you put a broom handle in the sliding section so that he can't open the door? (This is only good for when you're at home, but it might help you sleep easier).
Its not too safe in case of a fire or anything.
