Takanori was holding the flowers he picked for his mother, he couldn’t wait to give them to her. He picked her favorite type of flowers, buttercups. Walking down the path to his he found his mother sitting on the edge of the raised floor, sipping tea.
“Mama, mama! I got you pretty flowers!”
“Oh, my sweet child, come here.”
He ran over and nearly tripped over his kimono. He passed the flowers to her and she smiled at them fondly before setting them down. Picking up Takanori she held him in her arms. Humming a soft lullaby to him.
“You’re going to be so beautiful when you get older, you look like your big sister Kana when she was this age.”
“Why did Kana leave this world, Mama?”
“Some people are just not meant for this world and they need to help God with his duties.”
“Oh, so she’s an angel?”
“Yes she is.”
“She’s the prettiest angel I bet.”
Takanori’s head turned when he heard foot steps. He saw his father and tried to hide against his mother. He didn’t like his father a lot because he was mean. The older man huffed.
“Mayori, when are you going to stop babying the boy? Also what’s with that outfit, why is he dressed like a girl?”
“Kane…please, not today. He’s just going through a phase trying to get through Kana’s death…he’ll grow out of it.”
Takanori held back a choked sob, he didn’t understand why his dad hated him. He peeked at his father who stared at him in disdain, the older man walked away grumbling about how he was doomed with a failure of a son.
“Mama, why does father hate me…?”
“He doesn’t sweetie, he doesn’t. He just has a hard time showing love…”
“Okay…”
“I have an idea, why don’t you come help me make dinner, we’ll have chicken curry tonight.”
Takanori smiled and slid off his mother’s lap and ran off towards the kitchen. Mayori stood up and followed her son to the kitchen.
Later that night she was tucking him into bed and kissed him on the forehead. She then began singing him a song she sang to him every night since he was born.
“I’m sorry after awhile, let me sleep by your name…”
Takanori fell asleep to the sound of his mother’s voice and sound rain hitting the roof. He was having such a nice dream, him and Kana we picking flowers for their mother. He was admiring how her sleek wavy brown hair fell to her waist, he wished his hair would do that. He loved his sister dearly and he was still sad about her passing on into the next world. Suddenly Kana spoke.
“Taka…Taka…Takanori!”
Takanori’s eyes snapped open and he saw his mother, her eyes in a panic. She had tears running down her face.
“Mama?”
She took off her necklace and put it around his neck then pulled him out of bed and hid him into the secret compartment in the wall. She then put his stuffed bear into his lap.
“Sweetie, don’t come out, no matter what. Remember I love you and so does your father. Do not come out till you hear the birds chirping, do you understand?”
“Why, Mama?”
“Baby, please…”
“Okay…I love you Mama. I promise”
She kissed his forehead and caressed his face.
“I love you too, I love you so much, remember, I will not always be here physically…but I will always be in your heart.”
That was the last thing Takanori heard from his mom before she closed the compartment door. It was silent for a few minutes before Takanori heard the door being slammed open, his mother’s screams and men he’d never heard before. Peeking through the small hole he saw the men had stripped his mother naked and began doing things he didn’t know of to her. He suppressed his whimpers and buried his face into his stuffed bear. He could hear the men’s wicked laughter and his mother’s pleas and screams. After awhile his mother’s screams became more and more quiet. Soon he heard her no more and then he heard the men.
“Heh, stupid bitch. Good thing we killed her husband or we may not have had any fun.”
“Doesn’t she have a kid, I saw children’s clothes on the line. Bet we could have made a pretty penny from the kid.”
“Eh, whatever, we got other things and we got some fun, screw a damn little brat.”
Takanori kept himself quiet and he kept his promise to his mother and waited till he heard the birds chirping before he came out. He ran over to his mother’s bloodied, beaten body.
“Mama…? Mama?”
He set his bear down and hugged her, her body cold with death. Just like Kana’s was. Takanori cried, not caring if he was getting covered in blood, all he wanted was his mother back.
“Mama…I love you…please Mama…please wake up…”
Then his little body couldn’t take it and he passed out from sheer exhaustion.
