Takanori sat up and noticed the darkness in his room. Looking around he found his sister curled up next to his futon. Pulling off his blanket he set it on her and stood up. He quietly crept out of the room and looked around, he noticed a light coming from his mother’s room. Walking to her room, her noticed her sewing, it was a pretty kimono she was working, he certainly didn’t remember any festivals coming up. Knocking on the wall she turned and looked at him, a smile gracing her features.
“Hello my beautiful boy, come here and keep me company, I have something to tell you.”
He walked over and sat down by her. Watching her as she worked on the kimono.
“I bet your wondering who this is for? Its for you, now I bet you’re wondering why. Well…you know that man who was here earlier?”
Takanori nodded, scared, did the man think he was girl and wanted his hand in marriage? He hoped not, that was a terrifying thought. He hoped his mother didn’t say yes.
“He was from the palace, he really loves your art, he gets it for the palace and the Empress is fond of your work.”
Takanori looked up into his mother’s eyes, his own eyes wide.
“The Empress was wondering, if you would be interested in doing portraits for her.”
Takanori nodded, a smile spreading onto his face.
“With an exception, my child. They will portraits of her son, the crowned prince.”
He stopped smiling and bit his lip. That would mean being by a man a lot. Men were strong and they could do horrible things, he had seen it with his two eyes. Shaking his head he looked down and began playing with his necklace. If he had to be near a man everyday for long periods of time he, was positive he would end beaten and abused. Scooting over closer to his mother, he lightly, took the kimono from her hands and set it down and put his head in her lap.
“My, my, still pushy. Now don’t act like a spoiled child.”
Takanori huffed as she began playing with his hair. She hummed softly to him, his eyes became droopy as he became tired again.
“I’m not trying to force you, but this will be good for your art, little one.”
He turned and looked up at her, her hand came down and cupped his cheek.
“I promise this will be good for you and if it doesn’t work out, you can always come home to me and Kanon.”
He chewed on his lip, but began nodding. Sitting up looks out the window at the starry sky.
“Your mom would be so proud.”
Takanori’s brows furrowed and he grabbed the ink and paper scrawling something out on it and held it up to her.
You are my mom.
She smiled.
“I know dear, I am proud of you, but I mean your birth mother. I hope I did a good job with raising you…”
He wrote something else down.
You did a perfect job. Thank you, mom. I love you.
She smiled and kissed his cheek.
“You’re such a good person, Taka, now if your hungry there’s some rice balls for you, if not you can go back to sleep.”
Standing up he walked out the room and spared one last glance to her, she sent a warm smile to him. He sighed and walked back to his room. Looking at Kanon he quietly padded over to where she slept and picked her up, well, partially dragged her, to his futon. He certainly didn't want her to catch a cold, that would just make him a bad big brother wouldn’t it? He laid down next to her and fell asleep, this probably be one of the last times he’d get to cuddle with his sister, wouldn’t it? He didn’t like that thought.
The six days passed too fast for Takanori’s taste. He was actually going to do this, wasn’t he? He had everything he needed packed and he was going to be leaving everything that was comfortable and home to him. Takanori walked around his mother’s garden and sat in the grass patch and stared at the crystal clear blue sky, watching birds fly by. He stayed like that for awhile until he heard his mother’s voice.
“Takanori, sweetie, they’re here!”
Standing up he walked back to the house, sparing one last glance at his beloved garden. Walking into the house he followed the voices to the main room. He nearly fell from weak knees at the tall man standing there.
“Oh, Takanori, there you are, this Yuu, he’s the swordsmen assigned to protect you until you get to the castle.”
The raven hair man smiled and bowed.
“Pleased to meet you, I go by Aoi, its easier so people don’t confuse Yutaka and I.”
Takanori nodded leaning against the doorframe for support. Aoi walked past him and held the door open for him. Takanori walked out the door and bowed, he was very shaky due to the fact he would be with at least three men (if you counted the ox driver, that is) and not a single women. Taking deep breaths he calmed himself, turning to his mother he hugged her and she kissed his forehead.
“Be a good boy and don’t give Aoi and Yutaka any trouble, okay?”
He nodded and then looked around for his younger sister. She came out of nowhere and ran up to him, holding her favorite hair pin that had a fake cherry blossom on it. Placing it in his hair she smiled and hugged him.
“I’m proud of you, now go knock’em dead with your art!”
They pulled back and shared a brief look. She kissed his cheek then pushed him towards the cart.
“Good luck!”
Yutaka stepped out the cart and passed Takanori a hole filled box.
“This is from the empress, she thought it might give you comfort on the long journey.”
Opening it he met two big brown eyes of a tan and black puppy. This might make the trip a bit easier for him.
By the time they arrived to the palace, the sun was lowering in the sky as dusk approached. The scene was beautiful. The palace at dusk, what a beautiful painting that would make. He stared for a few more minutes until a shrill bark got him out of his stupor. Looking at the small dog in his arms he smiled, he quite liked this dog. The little animal had peed on Aoi and Yutaka, that amused him, he laughing silently to himself.
“Takanori?”
He turned to a girl about his height and nodded, she smiled in return.
“Hello, I am Mai, I will be your maid while you stay at the palace.”
She pulled a bell covered bracelet from her sash and grabbed Takanori’s hand putting it on him.
“This is we can communicate better. Whenever I knock on your room door just shake your wrist to tell me I can come in. Is that okay with you?”
He nodded and Mai motioned for him to follow her.
“The queen is waiting for you, after you are done speaking with her, you may go to your room to rest for a bit before dinner.”
He just nodded and continued to follow her, nervously petting his dog, a dog he now called Koron. He nearly bumped into Mai when she stopped at a door. She knocked on it.
“Mistress, Takanori Matsumoto is here.”
“Come in.”
Takanori suddenly became nervous. Mai opened the door and he had to refrain from letting his jaw drop. Sitting on a plush pillow and extravagant gold and blue kimono was the prettiest women he had ever seen. She had ivory skin and really long ebony hair that was up in beautiful bun as the rest fell down her back. Her eyes were pale grey and she smiled at him with perfect pink lips. Sitting down on the pillow by the door her bowed to her and gripped Koron a little tighter.
“Hello my dear, do you like your gift?”
He nodded giving a meek smile.
“Good, good. Mai, go find Akira for me, heaven knows where he ran off to, check the usual places.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
Mai bowed and closed the door behind her.
“Now, you I will have you do a portrait of my son once every lunar cycle. You will do this up until he gets married, than you may go back to your village and return three times a years to do portraits of him and his wife.”
The door slide open and Takanori turned his head, the faintest gasp leaving his lips.
“Takanori, this my son Akira. I’d introduce you to his sister, but she’s married and lives with her husband.”
Akira walked over to his mother and say beside her on another plush pillow. Takanori bowed slightly, but his eyes never left Akira.
“Is this the artist you were telling me about?”
“Yes.”
“Wow, he’s certainly beautiful. I was expecting some fat old man.” Akira looked at Takanori and smiled. “Really, you are beautiful.”
Takanori looked down, he wasn’t expecting that. Most of the men who said that said it in gross crude manners like ‘hey beautiful come play with me night’ and make cat calls at him. He wasn’t use to respect from a man. Another reason why he didn’t exactly like men, they were rude and perverted. The Empress spoke again, making Takanori jump.
“Now, you must be tired, go rest up and I will have Mai get you when supper is ready. Show him to his room, Mai.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
Takanori bowed once more and stood up, keeping his dog cradled in his arms. The little puppy was laying on his back and Takanori squished the puppy’s big round belly, the little dog opened his eyes and closed them again. Looking back up Mai motioned for him to follow her. Walking be hind her he took notice of all the beautiful things he could paint and draw, that big cherry tree would be a good thing to paint. After a few more minutes they stopped in front of a door. She opened it and stepped aside.
“Here you go, this is your room, your things are inside. I will retrieve you when dinner is ready, remember what I said about the bells.”
Nodding he walked into the spacious room and closed the door behind him. Walking over to the futon he set the dog on the blankets and walked towards the table with the big mirror on it. Sitting down in front of it he scrunched his nose up as his appearance. His hair was a mess and the kohl around his eyes made him look like a raccoon. Grabbing the rag from the water basin he rag it out and fixed up on his eyeliner. Going over to his bag he pulled out his brush and comb then went back over to the table and sat down. Looking at his brush, he sighed, it was so beat up, but he couldn’t bring it to himself to throw it away. It had many childhood memories from when his real mother was still alive and when Kana was still alive. He loved to watch his mother brush Kana’s long brown wavy hair. He sighed grabbed his comb, dipping it into the water basin to get it wet and brushed his hair. Pulling out the hair clip his sister gave him, he put it back in so it was sturdy.
Getting up he went over to his bag and he pulled out his sketch book and opened up to a new page. Looking at the sleeping dog he began to draw, it was a precious sight, he felt the need to capture it. He ended up getting lost in his own world, as usual and jumped when he heard a knock on the door. Shaking his wrist the bells rang and Mai opened the door.
“Dinner is ready, after I take you to the dining area, I will come back to feed your dog and take him out for the bathroom, okay?”
He nodded and set his sketch book on the table with the mirror. Standing up he followed her out of the room and closed the door behind him, sun was almost set and a purple hue filled the sky. Stopping at a door Mai opened it and there was the Empress and Akira. Walking over to table he sat down o the pillow across fro the Empress and diagonal from Akira.
“You seem less tired, is the room to your liking?”
He nodded at the Empress and she smiled.
“Good, good.” She turned to her son and spoke. “Something on your mind Akira?”
“Uhm, yeah, Takanori, I was wondering…would you accompany to the garden? I think you’ll like it there…”
Takanori was amused, not why was this man suddenly so shy? Isn’t he the crowned prince? Shouldn’t he be more confident? Then again…if Takanori was alone with a man…wouldn’t bad things happen…? Akira was raised in a good house, maybe he wasn’t like most men. Well frankly Takanori didn’t know what most men were like since he ignored them, well to be truthful his from them. He nodded and took a sip of his tea. Dinner went over well Takanori did his best to try to answer things, but when you can’t talk, well its hard to answer questions.
“Well, I am going to bed now. Don’t stay up too late, alright boys?”
“Alright, mom.”
Takanori just nodded and watched as the queen left the room. Akira stood up and offered a hand to Takanori, which he accepted and was pulled to his feet.
“You’re very light, sheesh, its like you’ve never eaten before.”
Opening the door that lead outside Takanori followed Akira down some steps. They walked in silence for awhile. The moon was in the sky, everything was so peaceful. Takanori didn’t understand why he wasn’t having some sort of emotional break down from being by Akira alone at the night. Something about this man was comforting, he liked it. Takanori shivered a little, it was quite cold tonight. Akira stopped and turned to him.
“You’re cold, aren’t you?
Takanori nodded a little. Akira hummed and took off his haori and put it over Takanori’s shoulders.
“We don’t want you to catch a cold, now do we?”
Takanori smiled and the two continued walking. Akira stopped by the cherry tree that Takanori had seen earlier and he sat down, Takanori copied this action.
“You know,” Akira started out. “My father use to take me on walks through the gardens all the time. I miss those days. He died when I was eleven. I don’t really come to the gardens any more, its not fun to walk around them by yourself. You can’t fully enjoy it unless you have someone to enjoy it with, you know?”
Takanori nodded weakly finding himself growing sleepy.
“I’m enjoying how I feel right now. I haven’t walked these gardens in awhile. I’ve missed this feeling…its such a nice feeling.” Akira turned his head and noticed Takanori asleep on his shoulder. “Well, look at this…”
Picking up Takanori bridal style he walked toward Takanori’s room so he could put the painter into bed. It was a few minute walk, but it felt like a long time to Akira. He noticed Takanori was not as happy as he could be, he wanted to help him. He wanted him to smile sincerely, he wanted to hear Takanori talk again. Akira knew he didn’t know the boy long, but he felt a connection with him, like something he never really had before.
Opening Takanori’s down a little dog hopped up and down trying to get to his master and made whining noses. Akira shushed the dog and went over to the futon, pulling back the covers he set Takanori down and removed Takanori’s tabi socks and sandals. He pulled the covers back over Takanori and went to the door and turned around.
“Night Takanori…”
Then left closing the door.
