For a white elephant game at a xmas party, I gave my comic book. When it was revealed and people wonder what it was, I froze. When people even mentioned casual interest, I did nothing.

Pimping your own work takes practice, man. It's not something that comes naturally to most people. There are internal barriers that have to be overcome. You will get better at this with practice. Trust me. And in my experience, your significant other will be better at it than you, and more enthusiastic, at least at first...
