What is the game checkers?

It's a game of strategy played on a black and white checkered board. There are several different types of pieces, each with their own rules on how they can move across the board. Each player has a king piece and the object is to capture the king.

I believe checkers is a bit like this. Although admittedly I've never played checkers.
