'…It was in an old village, far away from any big city, far away from any electricity that the horror reside, it was the small village of Smallfield which was located at the edge of a wide bamboo forest that suffered most of all
In that small village where everything seemed nice and normal there was the hidden horror, in the midst of the night when everyone slept something black and clocked sneaked into the houses and murdered those who dared dishonor his forest…'
A yawn and hand stretch, this was so boring
'Come on man, this doesn’t amuse you even the slightest?' his friend blinked
'What? The still at lose murderer or the rubbish of this legend?' he blinked
His friend shook his head, he was hopeless for sure
'Gather around everyone' the chief walked into the department and called out, they all obeyed at once
'A letter reached my office, a letter that the mailman didn't know to whom to give, although he had his suspicious' he couldn't help but add, everyone blinked and waited
'It's addressed to the weird detective' the chief held the envelope in his hand showing it to everyone
'Oh it's for you' his friend hit him on the back
'What? Come on man!' he tried to protest but as he turned his head to look at his friend he felt someone stop in front of him, he turned his face to look again and saw the chief standing in front of him holding the letter
'The mailman wanted to give it to you, and I agree. You're the weird detective around here' he shook his head and handed him the letter
'I'm not weird, I', brilliant. You all say this behind my back!' he frowned
'And we never say it in front of your face because you're head is big as it is without anyone saying anything' his friend snickered ' but doesn't say you're not weird'
'Brilliant mind are always misunderstood, and mistreated' he mumbled to himself and shook his head. They all rolled their eyes at him
He took the letter and opened it, it contained one piece of paper, one that had only a few letters on it and as he read it said:
Smallfield village
It started again
He flipped the page around and frowned, looked at his friend and hissed:' very funny, who sent this?'
No one answered, they shook their heads and swore they didn't send it, the chief frowned, this was a most disturbing news for sure
'Sir?' he blinked, not liking the look in his leader's eyes
'Send this to the lab at once, tell them to examine it well and get any evidence they could out of it'
He frowned yet nodded and took the letter to the lab himself, Smallfield? This name was familiar to him somehow
Getting back from the lab he headed back to his desk, his friend rushed over to him, half the department rushed to him wanting to know what happened
'Hey' he looked at his friend, hoping for an answer ' why does the name Smallfield ring a bell in my head?' he frowned
'Dude, we were just reading about it online, the village where the murders happened ten years ago. No suspects were arrested and the case is still open, more than ten people were killed back then and the killer left no evidences whatsoever to lead us to him'
He frowned some more. That case was and still is a black mark in the police records, the fact that such a serial killer was able to escape and still free disturbed him to no end. Yet, the news that it would start all over again disturbed him even more. Was it real? Who sent this letter? Why to him? What did he have to do with all that?
'What do you think will happen now?' his friend asked
'I don’t like what I think will happen next' he mumbled and turned to his computer's monitor, he pulled the keyboard closer and began typing the name Smallfield in the search engine
He read about the village, everything in it seemed old, there was no damn electricity, no hot water yet and no phone lines. It was as if you went a few centuries back in time or something. Everyone wore hanbok and worked in their fields, this was so not like him
'Why are you reading this?' his friend blinked
'Because I've got the worst luck ever and I know what'll happen' he hissed and his friend blinked not understand
A minute later the phone on his desk rang and he answered, as he hanged up he sighed and went to the chief's office, knocked and entered
'What did I ever do to you?' he whined the second the door closed, he didn't like this
The old man smiled but didn't answer; it was always amusing to see the man whine like this
'I don't want to go to the end of the world. I searched about the place; it's in the middle of the nowhere! No electricity, no hot water and no phone lines so no internet as well. How will I survive there?'
'The letter was addressed to you' the old man spoke
'Still, you're sending me away because you hate me, you don't want me to get that promotion, don't you?' he frowned and whined some more
'Let's make a deal. You solve this case and I will assign you as chief detective of the homicide department, deal?'
He blinked, considered it for a second and frowned:' what's the catch? You won't be offering me such a perfect deal if it was as easy as it sounds?'
'You know this case is still open from ten years now, it's a shameful stamp on the police records and we need to fix it, we can't allow people to be killed again without us doing anything. So, I'm sending the best man I have'
'Now you're filling up my head with nonsense so I'll go' he frowned
The chief rolled his eyes at him a little and spoke again:' well, you must go anyway so go and pack up'
Frowning he grabbed the case's folder from his chief's office and rushed out mumbling to himself leaving a chuckling old man behind him shaking his head at his behavior
Going to his apartment he packed up everything he needed and looked, he was to leave all this technology behind, his life behind and go to the middle of the nowhere to catch a killer, something he thought would only happen on movies, but for his luck it happened to him as well
But why was the letter sent to him? He frowned, thinking about it that. A killer wouldn't be able to cross all this distance and drop it in the police post, it wasn't mailed, there was no stamp on it or anything so it wasn't sent via normal mail, someone handed it in, but who? The killer? Why would he warn out the police if he was to start killing again? Wouldn't it be better to keep it as quiet as possible?
The more he thought about this the more it seemed like a stupid prank to him, he just needed to go to this village and prove that everything is alright and come back, then he'll be promoted and his life will be back at track. So, the fastest he went the fastest he comes back
He stayed all day in his apartment packing and preparing, he only brought some things with him, the things he needed most, he won't take long so no need to take everything, however he still considered the possibility that it wasn't a prank so he packed up his kit and by the evening he was ready to go
He took his own car, he brought with him some gallons of fuel too because he didn't know where to find a fuel there
Getting into his car with his GPS and map he drove away, his gun and badge on his side and his mind already working up, he couldn't just go into the village and flash his badge around telling he's a detective and wants to investigate them, no, he had to do it undercover, he must be super careful and do it right
Cooking up a plan in his mind he drove out of the city, according to his GPS he had to go in a straight line for another two hours before turning right, this was a long night for sure
He drove and drove, his entire body grew stiff, his muscles were hurting him already and he couldn't move now, he lost feeling of his bottom and back a couple of hours ago. But, he was finally there, he was at the entrance of Smallfield village, it looked even older than he saw in the pictures on the internet, it was sunrise and it looked as if he entered a historical place, from a historical movie or something…
The bamboo forest looked so wide and pretty, like a painting on a wall more than anything else, the village looked like if out of a fairytale, this was where it all begins…
