If Arkansas is pronounced Arkansaw, and is spelled like Kansas, then why isnt Kansas prounounced Kansaw o.O ( Read more... )

In American English you will note that the prefix Ark may have the effect on the pronounciation of the -as suffix, namely making it an "aw" rather than an "as".

We just don't talk about that rule often. Its much more vexing that Y can't commit to being either a vowel or a consonant.

It has been theorized that the designers of American English suffered unparalleled mental deficiencies, added to this was a long list of abused narcotics and amphetamines. Saddly, though, this realization came too late..
