Three weeks in and it's been a bit like being paid to take a self-guided crash course on African American health disparities. I'm allowed to sit in my office and read, without interruption, for hours, developing open-ended everything. Take three weeks to learn everything you can about African American history. Ready, set, go. Three weeks in, and I ( Read more... )

You're a career lady now, lady. Was it Linda Bolton? That sounds like something she'd do.

Where is your office? I'm in ancient old Boyd Tower, the original hospital. I still haven't figured out what stairwell to explore in order to see the gargoyles.

I probably shouldn't say. But, not Bolton!

I'm in the John Colloton Pavilion, top floor. What do you do?

Gargoyles! Makes me want to look up photographs of Boyd in the archives.

I've heard there's some stairwell with big windows in Boyd Tower that look out onto the gargoyles. I imagine it's in the part where you can go up to the 13th floor. I'm actually in an academic department, in the College of Public Health. My department is a grad program to teach people how to be healthcare administrators. Mostly full of people who enjoy wearing suits to class, but there are a few gems who genuinely want to make things better for the proletariat.

Was it Miriam Gilbert? I never took a class with her, but I had the chance to dine with her over the weekend (along with quite a few UI bigwigs), and she has deplorable table manners. Lots of chomping with her mouth open and gabbing with a mouth full of food. She knows all of the good Shakespeare to use in wedding toasts off the top of her head, though, so you've got to give her that.

I went back a few entries to post this on purpose.. I guess I wanted it out of the way where nobody else would notice it.

But all I really wanted to say was that you write very very well.

You have this way of writing that's reminicsent of hazy summer days, cinnamon, log fires and fireflies all underpinned with a sense of wisdom. It really is beautiful.

I'd give you some kind of award if I could.. like a trophy or a medal, but unfortunately I'm not on the board of any kind of committee like that so this will have to do.

This really meant a lot to me. I read it at work and was really taken aback by it. Really, Peter. Thank you.
